Carbuncles (Ding Chuang) all occur on the four limbs, presenting with yellow blisters; the center may be purple or black. The symptoms invariably begin with itching followed by pain, and chills followed by fever. If a purple-black line resembling a red thread extends straight upward from the lesion, in an emergency, one must urgently prick the tip of the red thread with a needle to drain toxic blood, then apply Chan Su Pill (Toad Venom Pill) to the pricked site. During needling, it is appropriate when the patient feels pain and blood flows. Otherwise, the toxin may travel along the red thread into the abdomen and attack the Heart, leading to critical danger.
The etiology of Carbuncles is the struggle between Wind pathogen and Heat toxin.
