Pulse: A string-like pulse (Xian Mai) indicates Wind; a soggy and weak pulse (Ru Ruo Mai) indicates Dampness; a flooding and rapid pulse (Hong Shu Mai) indicates Heat; a slow and choppy pulse (Chi Se Mai) indicates Cold, while a faint and slippery pulse (Wei Hua Mai) indicates Deficiency; a firm and hard pulse (Lao Jian Mai) indicates Excess. A knotted pulse (Jie Mai) is due to Qi stagnation; a scattered pulse (San Mai) is due to excessive worry; a tight pulse (Jin Mai) is due to anger; a fine pulse (Xi Mai) is due to sorrow.
Numbness is caused by Wind, pain by Cold, and swelling by Dampness. Redness, swelling, and pain at the medial malleolus of the foot are named "Ankle-Encircling Wind" (Rao Bi Feng). Redness, swelling, and pain at the lateral malleolus are named "Piercing Ankle Wind" (Chuan Huai Feng). Redness, swelling, and pain in both knees are named "Crane's Knee Wind" (He Xi Feng). Pain in both thighs and hips is named "Thigh Wind" (Tui Feng).
Swelling characterizes "Damp Hong Kong Foot" (Shi Xiang Gang Jiao - damp-type podagra/foot strike). Dampness causes tendons and vessels to become lax, soft, swollen, or prone to sores, known as Damp Hong Kong Foot. The treatment should promote diuresis to drain Dampness and disperse Wind. Non-swelling characterizes "Dry Hong Kong Foot" (Gan Xiang Gang Jiao - dry-type podagra/foot strike). Dryness implies Heat, with curled, contracted, painful, withered, thin, non-swollen tendons, known as Dry Hong Kong Foot. The treatment should moisten blood and clear dryness.
Absence of sweat with wandering pain indicates predominance of Wind. Wind pathology presents with a floating pulse and resolves with sweating. Cramping and pulling pain indicate predominance of Cold. Cold pathology presents with a slow pulse and resolves with warming. Swelling, fullness, and heavy pain indicate predominance of Dampness. Damp pathology presents with a fine pulse and resolves with渗利 (seeping/drainage). Dryness, thirst, and solid stool indicate predominance of Heat. Heat pathology presents with a rapid pulse and resolves with purgation.
