Although the above three cases did not achieve complete recovery, administering dispersing and resolving medicines still yielded good effects during critical stages of the illness when progress was stalled. However, through years of practical observation, I have come to know that using only dispersing and resolving medicines can only alleviate symptoms and reduce patient suffering, but is difficult to cure the disease completely. It is necessary to combine other methods and conduct syndrome differentiation and treatment (Bian Zheng Lun Zhi) for proper management. Nevertheless, the method of dispersing and resolving remains an important and effective means for treating cancer and deserves in-depth research and exploration.
**A Verified Case of Pancreatic Cancer Treatment**
Patient Zhao, male, 71 years old, retired worker. The patient had a strong constitution and no history of chronic diseases. In January 1995, he experienced dull pain in the left upper abdomen, intermittent in nature, which he did not pay much attention to. By early March, the pain intensified, becoming sometimes unbearable, prompting him to seek medical attention at a hospital. On March 14, 1995, a CT report from Puzhong Hospital stated: "1. Enlarged gallbladder, cholecystitis. 2. Possible space-occupying lesion in the uncinate process of the pancreas." The preliminary diagnosis was pancreatic cancer. Surgical resection was recommended, but the patient refused due to his advanced age and severe condition. Introduced by a friend, he invited me to treat him with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
First consultation on March 24, 1995. The patient's main symptoms at the time were general fatigue and pain in the left upper abdomen. The characteristic was a sensation of distension more than pain. During episodes of acute distension, he felt extremely uncomfortable, unable to sit or lie down peacefully, with a sensation of Qi rising from above the navel towards the chest and heart. The pain was paroxysmal, and sometimes severe pain caused groaning. Appetite was acceptable, and bowel movements were normal. There was no fever or symptoms related to the gallbladder or intestines/stomach. The pulse was large, choppy, and stagnant, with four beats per breath (approximately 40-50 bpm depending on breath rate interpretation, literally 'four beats per respiration cycle'). The tongue body was pale red, with a thin, white, greasy coating slightly yellowish in color. Based on these pulse and symptom manifestations, the pattern was identified as Qi deficiency with impaired Spleen transportation and transformation, leading to the retention of Phlegm-Turbidity congealing with Qi and Blood stagnation, forming abdominal masses (Zha Ji), which accumulated toxicity over time to become malignant tumors (E Zheng). The treatment principle was to tonify Qi and strengthen the Spleen to support Yuan Qi and enhance transportation/transformation. This was combined with resolving Phlegm and softening hardness, promoting Qi circulation and activating Blood, and detoxifying while resolving masses. The prescription was as follows:
Sheng Huang Qi (Raw Radix Astragali) 30g, Tai Zi Shen (Pseudostellaria Root) 15g, Chao Bai Zhu (Stir-fried Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 10g, Dan Shen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root) 15g, Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) 10g, Gua Lou Pi (Pericarpium Trichosanthis) 10g, Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb) 10g, Kun Bu (Laminaria/Kelp) 10g, Hai Zao (Sargassum) 10g, Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) 10g, Chao Zhi Shi (Stir-fried Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) 10g, Jiao Shan Zha (Charred Crataegus Fruit) 15g, San Leng (Rhizoma Sparganii) 10g, E Zhu (Rhizoma Curcumae) 10g, Zhi Ji Jin (Honey-processed Gallus Gallus Domesticus Gizzard Lining) 10g, Ban Zhi Lian (Scutellaria Barbata Herb) 30g, Shi Jian Chuan (Prunella Vulgaris Herb) 15g, Mu Li (Oyster Shell) 30g, Bai Hua She She Cao (Hedyotis Diffusa Herb) 50g.
The above prescription was modified according to symptoms. The last consultation was on June 19. There were eleven consultations in total, and eighty-four doses of decoction were taken. The patient stopped medication on his own after symptoms disappeared and pain alleviated.
In August 1996, fourteen months after stopping medication, the patient was hospitalized again due to severe upper abdominal pain. The diagnosis was inflammatory swelling of the gallbladder, and surgical resection was performed. Upon laparotomy, the pancreas was examined first, revealing a shrunken tumor lesion. This confirmed that the patient indeed suffered from pancreatic cancer and that TCM treatment had led to a cure.
Commentary: Since this case was treated purely with TCM after confirmation, the efficacy of TCM is unquestionable, hence it is selected for reporting. Analyzing the reasons for the rapid effect, there are roughly the following points:
First, an open mind and stable emotions. The patient was a manual laborer with low education, unfamiliar with the highly malignant nature of cancer. He believed that since it was a disease, taking medicine would cure it, thus having no psychological pressure. Among the cancer patients I treated who achieved therapeutic effects, most were similar. Some patients even had their condition concealed by family members. In contrast, patients with higher cultural literacy are often quick-witted and prone to melancholy. They find it difficult to conceal their condition, and once aware, struggle to dispel their distress. Heavy psychological burdens place them in an irreversible state and hinder medicinal efficacy at the point where "the spirit does not respond" (Shen Bu Shi), meaning mental state blocks therapeutic action. Thus, "hope turning into disappointment is akin to despair," how can one speak of curing the disease! From this perspective, it is better for cancer patients not to know their condition. For those who do know, they must not panic but face it correctly. Remember, gaining one unit of mental freedom adds one unit of hope for treatment. If they understand their condition well and cooperate tacitly with the physician, it is even better and certainly helps improve efficacy, which is most desirable.
Second, sincere trust in the physician and focused medication. Cancer is a disease with extremely high malignancy. After extreme anxiety, patients and families may desperately seek various doctors, leading to a mix of effective and ineffective remedies. Distinguishing between true elixirs and poison is difficult. This confuses the Yin-Yang, Qi, and Blood of the entire body, causing dormant pathogens to flare up aggressively. It also increases confusion for the physician regarding the disease's thinking and understanding. Seeking a quick cure may lead to disaster, resulting in untreated conditions that should be treated and curable conditions that become hard to cure. In this case, the patient trusted my exclusive diagnosis and did not take other medications. My diagnostic approach and prescription were undisturbed, matching the disease appropriately, hence the rapid recovery.
Treatment for cancer is still under exploration, and no physician has absolute certainty. Therefore, we cannot demand that patients rely solely on one doctor; delaying treatment due to switching doctors could lead to regret. One should choose carefully and proceed meticulously. Treat with one physician for a period; if efficacy is truly poor, then switch to another physician chosen after deep consideration. Do not rapidly change prescriptions or try numerous drugs indiscriminately. Remember to select doctors, treatments, and medications with a scientific mindset; this is the correct approach.
Third, avoiding indiscriminate use of tonics. Apart from three meals, this patient ate no other miscellaneous foods and did not consume any tonics or turtle meat. All tonics possess medicinal properties; taking tonics is equivalent to taking medicine. If coordinated with the treatment medicine, there is little harm; if uncoordinated or contrary in nature, it could ruin matters. Therefore, not abusing tonics is considered good self-care. As for soft-shelled turtle, its cloying nature stagnates the Stomach, obstructs Phlegm, and retains Dampness. Although popular belief claims it fights cancer, I have seen many cancer patients with weak Stomach Qi and internal Phlegm-Dampness. Frequently consuming this substance—beneficial or harmful? Thinking about it makes it clear.
**Records of Hearing About Effective Cases of Tumor Treatment**
Motherland's medical science is a great treasure trove and a powerful weapon for humanity to conquer tumors. Through years of practical research and summary, TCM consensus on the etiology and pathogenesis of tumors is gradually forming: Excess pathogens such as Qi Stagnation, Phlegm-Fluid, Damp-Turbidity, Blood Stasis, and Heat-Toxin are the primary causes of disease; deficiency of the body's Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang provides the foundation for susceptibility and pathogen invasion. Consequently, physicians' treatment methods vary based on their theoretical understanding, practical experience, and regional differences in climate, customs, water/soil, and constitution. However, they generally fall into two major categories: Supporting Healthy Qi (Fu Zheng) and Expelling Pathogens (Qu Xie). In Fu Zheng methods, some emphasize tonifying Qi, others nourishing Yin and generating fluids, while some use blood-nourishing and Yin-tonifying or warm-moistening and Yang-assisting methods, decided according to clinical judgment. In Qu Xie methods, some emphasize that cancer results from accumulated toxins that do not flow, condensing over time. The致病 toxin can be chemical carcinogens, physical radiation, viruses, or biological damage. Thus, large doses of heat-clearing and detoxifying herbs are used, or toxic substances are used to combat toxicity, based on the theory that "when pathogens are expelled, healthy Qi becomes secure." Besides using anti-toxin methods alone, clinical practice often combines several methods. Some regard heat-clearing/detoxifying, activating Blood/resolving stasis, and softening hardness/dispersing nodules as the "three principles" of tumor treatment. Enlightened theories synthesize various etiologies and pathogenesis, then apply individualized treatment based on the Four Diagnostic Methods and Eight Principles. For example, some physicians base their legislation on "Five Causes and Six Methods": Deficiency of Healthy Qi - Support Healthy Qi and consolidate the Root; Deep-rooted Toxin - Clear Heat and Detoxify; Long-standing Illness leads to Stasis - Activate Blood and Resolve Stasis; Qi Depression and Phlegm Knotting - Regulate Qi and Transform Phlegm; Liver Depression and Qi Stagnation - Soothe Liver and Relieve Depression; and the fundamental method for masses and accumulations - Soften Hardness and Disperse Nodules. Although the above descriptions may seem fragmented and unsystematic, they are all orthodox methods for treating tumors and serve as guidelines for contemporary TCM. Moreover, even folk treatments for tumors, though diverse, do not exceed these categories. Here, I select three cases personally verified by me with definite efficacy, detailing their treatments for readers' reference.
**Case 1: Treating Gastric Adenocarcinoma with Duikou Mushroom**
Patient Xu, over fifty years old. Previously a senior executive, later transferred to work as a clerk in a grain store. At around fifty, he developed gastric adenocarcinoma. He followed medical advice for chemotherapy and herbal medicine, cooperating well with physicians. Although he relapsed multiple times, he managed his health well. This occurred around the early 1970s; specific dates are forgotten. Suddenly, the old disease flared up. His epigastrium swelled and protruded, with unbearable pain. He could not swallow even a drop of water; even small spoonfuls given via a teaspoon were vomited out. No food could be taken, and life was maintained only by intravenous glucose drip. Fortunately, his wise wife, amidst tears, heard that Duikou Mushroom (Opposite-mouth Mushroom) could treat this disease. She urgently wrote letters to friends and relatives everywhere to find it quickly. Eventually, an old woman in a certain place donated a rare item she had treasured for decades. It was said that this mushroom grew on the outside of a coffin lid, opposite the mouth of a deceased person who had held gold/silver in their mouth upon death. The vapor rose from the mouth to the lid, and over time, a toxic mushroom grew there. Collected, dried in the shade, and stored properly, it could treat various toxic sores. The dried product was purple-black, only the size of a mung bean. The old woman wrapped it in dozens of layers of silk cloth, showing her careful preservation. The Xu family received the mushroom like a treasure, placed it in a small bowl, added a few spoons of clear water, waited until slightly softened, then steamed it over boiling water. Immediately after steaming, it was sent to the hospital. Miraculously, when fed slowly with a teaspoon, Mr. Xu did not vomit. He drank nearly half a bowl of the medicinal juice continuously without vomiting. Hours later, drinking glucose water also did not cause vomiting. The next morning, rice water was administered, which he tolerated. Then, the mushroom was stewed again to extract a second dose of juice, fed similarly, and finally, the mushroom itself was eaten. Vomiting stopped immediately. Within a week, epigastric distension and pain disappeared, and the lesion returned to pre-attack levels. Normal diet and self-care gradually resumed. After one month, he returned to work. He continued taking herbal medicine from a certain hospital and undergoing chemotherapy. Five months later, the old disease relapsed again. Unable to find more Duikou Mushrooms, he ultimately died.
**Case 2: Brain Space-Occupying Lesion Treated with Walnut Branch Boiled Eggs**
Mr. Yu, an accountant from a bureau, was from a rural area in Haiyan, Zhejiang. His wife and children remained in his hometown. His eldest son, coming of age in 1970, suffered from headaches. Treatment was ineffective, and the pain gradually worsened to an unbearable level. He rushed to Shanghai for examination at Huashan Hospital's Neurology Department. Diagnosed with a "brain space-occupying lesion" of uncertain nature, he underwent radiotherapy and returned home, showing some improvement but not full resolution of symptoms. His father found a prescription for internal use of walnut branch boiled eggs, purchased walnut branches, and instructed his son to prepare it according to the method.
Walnut branches should be finger-thick; too thick ones are too old, and too thin ones are too tender, neither meeting standards. Daily, 200g of fresh branches were boiled in water, then simmered on low heat for four hours. Since walnut branches are toxic, long boiling removes toxicity. Simultaneously, four whole eggs were added. When cooked, the shells were removed, ensuring the whites were not broken. Dozens of small holes were pricked into the egg whites with bamboo needles, and they were returned to the original liquid to boil until the liquid penetrated the eggs. After cooking in the morning, one egg and a cup of juice were consumed between breakfast and lunch. Between afternoon lunch and dinner, the second egg and another cup of juice were consumed. After dinner, the third egg and another cup of juice were consumed. The remaining egg was saved for the next morning after waking and washing, accompanied by a cup of the overnight liquid. Meanwhile, the day's medicinal eggs were prepared.
Mr. Yu's son followed this method daily without interruption, continuing for a year and a half. After the first three months, symptoms gradually alleviated, and subsequently, all symptoms disappeared. He recovered like a normal person, studying and working as usual. Medication was stopped after a year and a half, maintaining health thereafter, with no impact on marriage, childbirth, or career establishment. Before writing this article, Mr. Yu, retired and returning to his hometown for retirement, visited Shanghai for a family visit. I took the opportunity to inquire again. Mr. Yu stated his son had been cured for twenty-six or twenty-seven years and was now forty-eight years old. Aside from slightly slow reactions, there were no other abnormalities, essentially a radical cure. It was reported that while hospitalized, a colleague told him that someone with the same disease was cured by eating walnut branch boiled eggs, living in a certain alley on Wuyi Road. Mr. Yu visited and consulted, confirming the person indeed had a brain tumor and was cured. Thus, his confidence strengthened, and he instructed his son to follow the treatment. Additionally, Deputy Secretary Li of the District Committee (retired for many years) provided another example for Mr. Yu: Early in his military service, a comrade-in-arms diagnosed with severe headache and confirmed "brain tumor" at a relevant hospital lacked surgical conditions at the time. The patient traveled with the army and, during rest in Shandong, stayed at a fruit farmer's house. The farmer claimed he could cure this disease. Several walnut tree branches were cut, chopped, boiled in water, and drunk, significantly reducing pain. Before leaving, the farmer gifted several large bundles of walnut branches. After consumption, symptoms completely disappeared. After the founding of the People's Republic, Li and the comrade worked together in the military for nearly ten years, with no recurrence. Later, they transferred to civilian jobs; Li went to Shanghai, and the comrade went to Fujian, cutting off contact. The efficacy of walnut branches in treating tumors, especially cancer, is not yet confirmed. Although the above three cases were benign, they are miracles. Whether this substance has special effects on brain tumors awaits further research.
Walnut branches are toxic. Regarding detoxification methods, Mr. Jin Youjing provided three pathways in his book *Anti-Cancer Food and Medicine Materia Medica* for reference: "First, long boiling. Generally, boiling for four or five hours makes drinking the walnut branch medicinal juice directly safe. Second, boiling with multiple herbs. Third, adding food (lean meat or pig/sheep organs) for co-boiling." Recorded here for reference.
**Case 3: Late-stage Gastric Adenocarcinoma Cured by Traditional Chinese Medicine**
Patient Feng, who previously appeared in acupuncture cases as having Kidney Deficiency with Cold Invasion, experiencing immediate relief from needling Hegu (LI4) and Fuliu (KI7), was a clerk at a certain store. After retirement, he lived in Pudong countryside for a long time and did not seek treatment, so there was no communication for over ten years. Months ago, by chance, we met. He told me: At the end of 1989, he suffered stomach pain, and stool occult blood was (+++++). X-rays at Beicai Health Center showed a 0.8cm ulcer on the lesser curvature of the stomach with hyperplastic erosion. Due to ineffective treatment, the condition worsened. Gastroscopy and biopsy at Chuansha County People's Hospital confirmed a malignant lesion. Surgery and chemotherapy were recommended, but he refused due to fear. Hearing that a TCM practitioner surnamed Sun at a certain health center in Chuansha County was skilled in treating this disease, he took medicine from this doctor for about seven months and was eventually cured. In 1993, gastroscopy复查 at Zhoupu People's Hospital confirmed the lesion had disappeared. I asked him to send the prescription for study. He soon sent nearly thirty prescriptions. Checking the schedule, they were continuous prescriptions, with three different formulas used sequentially. I summarized them and recorded them below:
**Formula 1:** Taken from February 22, 1990, to the end of March, continuously for forty days.

**Brief Analysis:** The common herbs in the above three formulas are: Huang Qi, Dang Shen, Bai/Cang Zhu, Fu Ling, E Zhu, Dan Pi, Hong Zao, and Gan Cao. These have the functions of strengthening the Spleen and benefiting Qi, clearing heat, and dissipating nodules, laying the pharmaceutical foundation for Feng's cancer treatment. The subsequent formulas were expanded upon this basis.
Formula 1 focuses on clearing heat, detoxifying, inhibiting cancer, and transforming phlegm to dissipate nodules. Therefore, heavy doses of She She Cao, Teng Li Gen, Sheng Di Yu, Gua Lou Pi, Xiang Bei Mu, and Chi Shao were used. Taken for forty days, it severely attacked the lesion, swiftly sweeping away cancerous toxins, making it the most critical stage in the entire treatment process.
Formula 2 removed detoxifying and anti-cancer herbs like Teng Li Gen, Sheng Di Yu, Gua Lou Pi, and Chi Shao, keeping only She She Cao. This indicates that the tumor was effectively controlled by the previous stage of treatment. Relatively, there was insufficient Healthy Qi and deficiency of both Yin and Yang. Thus, herbs like Dang Shen, Bai Zhu, Shi Hu, Huang Jing, Yu Rou, Lu Jiao Shuang, Xian Ling Pi, Po Gu Zhi, and Wu Wei Zi were added to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach, support Middle Qi, tonify Liver and Kidney, and regulate Yin and Yang. Based on the medication analysis, the patient likely suffered from severe Yang deficiency at that time, so warming and tonifying Kidney Yang herbs outnumbered Yin-nourishing ones. This shows that selecting prescriptions and medications for cancer patients must be based on syndrome differentiation. If it is indeed Yang deficiency, warm and Yang-assisting herbs can be appropriately used, without necessarily using cold and cooling herbs just because cancer internally harbors heat and toxicity.
Formula 3 removed some Kidney-warming herbs from Formula 2, resulting in a formula that benefits Qi, strengthens the Spleen, transforms Dampness, and simultaneously warms Yang, promotes Qi circulation, and reduces cancer. At this time, the disease trend was receding, and Healthy Qi needed recovery. All heat-clearing and detoxifying agents used to inhibit tumors were withdrawn. Traditional Chinese medicine was formulated to combine supporting Healthy Qi and expelling Pathogens, serving as the final treatment to conclude the therapy.
