After the recent recovery from Shanghan (Cold Damage disease), if one fails to take proper care, recurrence may occur due to worry, overthinking, and mental exertion; or due to combing hair, bathing, and physical labor. These are collectively referred to as Laofu (recurrence due to overexertion). If recurrence occurs due to irregular diet, it is called Shifu (recurrence due to food). All these conditions result from the deficiency of spirit, Qi, blood, and intestines/stomach following a severe illness. There are standard formulas in medical theory that can be used for treatment based on specific syndromes. However, recurrence due to sexual intercourse is called Nülaofu (female-related recurrence due to overexertion), which often leads to death and is difficult to cure.
This formula primarily treats disharmony of Qi and vessels after Shanghan, characterized by aversion to cold with high fever, nasal congestion with brain stuffiness, thick and sticky snot and saliva, phlegm-cough with qi stagnation; or exposure to wind-dampness causing aversion to cold with fever, vexatious pain in bone joints; or vomiting and dizziness due to heatstroke; as well as cases where improper management after a severe illness leads to Shifu or Laofu, with symptoms returning to their original state. It also treats Wulao Qishang (five chronic exhaustion and seven injuries), dizziness due to Qi deficiency, mental confusion, restless sleep, limb fatigue, tidal fever with night sweats, spleen-stomach deficiency damage, sallow complexion, poor appetite, spitting sour water, organ slippage and diarrhea, abdominal rumbling, regurgitation and vomiting, heart and abdominal colic, chronic malaria and dysentery; as well as chest qi obstruction with throat blockage, upper jiao asthma and rapid breathing, restlessness in sitting and lying; or injury caused by diet leading to chest and diaphragm fullness and oppression, abdominal and hypochondriac distension; postpartum or antepartum blood-Qi disharmony, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, Qi jue (syncope) leading to loss of consciousness. Regular consumption can ward off pathogenic factors of the four seasons and mountain miasma/pestilence, with miraculous effects that cannot be fully described.
Ingredients: Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried), Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Chenpi (Aurantii Pericarpium), Bai Fuling (Poria), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, hairs removed, each 3 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take 2 qianbi per dose, with 1 zhan of water, 3 slices of fresh ginger, 1 jujube, 1 slice of dried papaya, and 2-3 leaves of Zisu (Perilla Leaf). Decoct until reduced to 7 fen. Take before meals. If vomiting and diarrhea occur, add Bai Mei (Mume Fructus) to decoct; if asthma/wheezing, add Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen); if Shanghan Laofu, add Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba); if chest qi obstruction, add Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, 3 cun) and a small amount of Shexiang (Moschus); if heatstroke with vomiting, add Xiangru (Elsholtziae Herba); if antepartum/postpartum blood-Qi disharmony, add Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) to decoct; if cholera, add Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba) to decoct; if Qi jue, administer with salted water.
