When a newborn infant is born, with faint breath and inability to cry, it is certainly due to difficult labor or exposure to cold. Immediately wrap the infant in cotton wadding and hold them in your arms. Do not cut the umbilical cord yet; instead, place the placenta into a charcoal stove to burn. Meanwhile, twist a thick paper torch, dip it in oil, light it, and pass it repeatedly over the umbilical cord to cauterize it. Since the umbilical cord connects to the infant's navel, the heat energy enters the abdomen through the navel. Then, rinse the umbilical cord with hot vinegar water. After a short while, the breath will return, and the infant will cry as usual; only then may they be bathed. After bathing, cut the umbilical cord.
Immediately after birth, wrap a finger with cotton and wipe all the foul blood from the infant's mouth. If not wiped promptly, once the infant cries, the blood will enter the abdomen and cause myriad diseases. At this time, do not feed milk immediately. Instead, first give a small amount of decoction made from crushed *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian, 黄连). Take the concentrated juice, mix it with fine powder of Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂), and smear it inside the infant's mouth to expel the old meconium from the abdomen. Only after this can milk be given. If the infant sleeps much, let nature take its course; do not force-feed milk, so that the infant will grow up naturally healthy and free from illness.
If a newborn has no urination or defecation and suffers from severe abdominal distension, urgently have a woman rinse her mouth with warm water, then suckle seven areas of the infant: the anterior chest, posterior back, below the navel, and the palms and soles of both hands and feet. Before each area, rinse the mouth three to five times. Suckle until the skin turns red. After a short while, urination and defecation will naturally proceed; otherwise, there will be no sign of life. Encountering this condition and applying this method can be considered giving the infant a second life.
Within the first week after birth, if an infant suddenly suffers from Umbilical Wind and Mouth Grasping (Neonatal Tetanus characterized by trismus), almost none survive, and many are left to die helplessly, which is truly pitiable. There is one extremely effective method, rarely known in the world. For those suffering from this, small blisters appear on the infant's gums, resembling millet grains. Dip a熟 cloth-wrapped finger in warm water and gently rub these blisters until they break. The mouth will open, and the infant will calm down without needing medication; the effect is miraculous.
Generally, every thirty-two days after birth, an infant undergoes a "Bian" (Transformation); two "Bian"s constitute one "Zheng" (Evaporation/Steaming). After ten "Bian"s and five minor "Zheng"s, plus three major "Zheng"s, totaling five hundred and seventy-six days, all transformations and evaporations are completed, and the child becomes an adult. The purpose of Bian and Zheng in infants is to nourish the blood vessels and transform the five Zang organs. "Bian" manifests as changes in upper Jiao Qi, while "Zheng" manifests as body heat. In mild cases, there is slight fever and minor惊悸 (palpitations/fright), cold ears and buttocks, white blisters appearing on the upper lip like fish eyes, and slight sweating. In severe cases, there is high fever, chaotic pulse, either sweating or no sweating, loss of appetite, vomiting upon eating, slightly red whites of the eyes, and slightly cloudy pupils. After the Bian-Zheng cycle ends, clarity returns naturally; this is the syndrome. Single Bian is mild; combined Zheng is more severe. In general, for Zheng, mild cases subside within five days, and severe cases within ten days. Within the ten-day window (five days before and five days after the expected date), the heat should subside. If the heat does not subside after the designated days, do not treat recklessly or use moxibustion/acupuncture. Instead, administer a small amount of Zi Wan (Purple Pill) to mildly induce purgation, and stop when the heat subsides. If the body, ears, and buttocks are all hot, this is another disease and should be treated differently.
