Treating Xuan Yong (abscesses in the throat or root of the tongue) caused by heat-toxin accumulation, resulting in sudden and severe swelling.
Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Ban Xia (Pinellia Rhizome) (washed with decoction to remove slipperiness, equal parts).
Grind the above into powder. Place a small amount on the tongue and swallow with saliva. Another method: apply salt to the tip of a chopstick, open the mouth, and press against the affected area, five or six times daily.
Treating Gu Zei Shi Yan (pharyngeal foreign body sensation/itching caused by swallowing grain awns), characterized by itching in the throat. This is due to accidentally swallowing grain awns that pierce and irritate the throat, causing itching and pain.
Zhi Ma (Sesame Seed) (stir-fried, quantity as needed).
Grind the above into powder and take with warm water. It is important to distinguish between "Gu Zei" (grain awn irritation) affecting the pharynx and "Ma Hou Feng" (acute laryngeal obstruction) affecting the larynx.
Treating Ma Hou Bi (severe sore throat with hoarseness resembling a horse's neigh), characterized by massive swelling extending to the cheeks and frequent, rapid breathing.
Ma Bian Cao Gen (Root of Calotropis Gigantea).
Crush and extract the natural juice. Swallow approximately one he (ancient unit of volume) per dose. Another method: administering the decoction of a horse bit iron is also effective.
The principles for treating choking/gagging can be extrapolated; for example, cormorants treat fish bone impaction, magnetite treats needle impaction, hair ash treats hair impaction, and wild cats treat bone impaction, all following the principle of treating like with like.
General treatment for various types of choking/gagging.
Boil Xie Bai (Allium Macrostemon Bulb) until half-cooked, tie it with a thread, hold the thread, chew slightly, and swallow. When the bulb reaches the site of impaction, pull the thread repeatedly to expel the object.
Another method: use a small piece of cotton soaked in honey, applied similarly to the Xie Bai method.
Yu Xie Wu You San (Jade Dust Worry-Free Powder) treats all types of foreign body impaction. (Formula see previous section).
Although the Kidney opens into the ears, one must understand that the ear is the meeting point of hearing, governing the reception of the five tones. Externally, these correspond to Gong, Shang, Jue, Zhi, and Yu; internally, they relate to the sounds Xu, Xi, He, and Chui. The ears connect internally with the five Zang organs and externally with the Six Exogenous Pathogens (Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire). Therefore, Wind, Cold, Summerheat, and Dampness can cause deafness, tinnitus, and ringing in the ears; emotional factors such as worry, thought, anger, and joy often cause internal blockage; while overwork and lack of exertion are self-evident. Additionally, there are conditions involving bleeding and pus formation, sores at the bottom of the ear canal, impacted cerumen (earwax), or insects entering the ear. Since these syndromes differ, their treatments vary accordingly.
Treating sudden ear pain and deafness/blockage where sound cannot be heard.
Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome), Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) (prepared, skin and umbilicus removed, equal parts).
Grind the above into powder, mix with vinegar to form pills the size of almond kernels. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear, changing twice daily.
Treating deafness due to Kidney deficiency, or Qi damage from fatigue, deficiency from wind-stroke, where Kidney Qi rises but fails to descend, leading to empty ringing in the ears.
Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Officinalis Fruit), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) (prepared), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Officinalis Root), Shao Yao (Peony Root), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), Tu Si Zi (Cuscuta Seed) (soaked in wine), Yuan Zhi (Polygala Root) (heart removed), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Bark), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Xi Xin (Asarum Root), Gan Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) (prepared), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Cong Rong (Cistanche Stem) (soaked in wine), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) (each 2 liang), Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome) (1 liang), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) (1.5 liang), Fu Ling (Poria) (0.5 liang), Yang Shen (Sheep Kidney) (2 pieces).
Grind the above herbs into powder. Mash the sheep kidneys finely, cook with wine and flour paste to form pills the size of wu-tzu seeds. Take 30 to 50 pills before meals, washed down with salt water or wine.
