For the treatment of epistaxis with immediate effect.
Bletillae Rhizoma (Baiji) (quantity unrestricted)
Grind the above into powder. Mix with cold water, and apply paper flowers to the nasal cavity [HT]. Another method: soften with Huangjiao Tang (Yellow Gum Decoction), and apply to the nasal cavity [HT].
When various types of blood accumulate in the patient's body and manifest as epistaxis, the pathway of clear Qi becomes blocked, while the pathway of turbid Qi surges upward. The blood remains stagnant in the chest and stomach, causing fullness and oppression. Vomiting several dou or even one shi of blood is termed "internal epistaxis" (Neinu). Alternatively, due to injury by the four external climatic factors, emotional disturbances internally, improper diet, sexual excess, or trauma from falls, Ying Blood may stagnate between the diaphragm. When full, it overflows and vomits out; this is commonly referred to as "reckless bleeding" (Wangxing).
Guizhi Gualougen Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Trichosanthes Root Decoction) treats hematemesis caused by wind-stroke. (Formula see External Causes Epistaxis Treatment section)
Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) treats hematemesis caused by summerheat. (Formula see External Causes Epistaxis Treatment section)
Chushi Tang (Dampness-Expelling Decoction) treats hematemesis caused by dampness. (Formula see External Causes Epistaxis Treatment section)
Treats hematemesis caused by the three causes (Internal, External, and Non-internal/External); as well as epistaxis, lower gastrointestinal bleeding, and all forms of reckless bleeding overflow.
Yezi Cihuang (Leaf-shaped Orpiment)
Take the single herb above, grind into coarse powder, place within jujube flesh, tie securely with thread, and boil in sufficient water. Use Heixi (Black Tin) equal in weight to the Cihuang, melt the tin into liquid, pour into the decoction, and boil for one day. Add water, allow to cool, remove the Cihuang, wash clean, dry, and grind into fine powder. Then, mix with the boiled jujube flesh to form pills the size of a wutong seed. Take five to seven pills per dose, administered with Heixi Jian Tang (Black Tin Decoction).
If the patient overeats, damaging the Stomach; or if Stomach deficiency fails to digest food, leading to regurgitation and vomiting, where food and Qi rush upward, compressing and rupturing the cardiac orifice, the vomited blood is bright red, accompanied by severe heart and abdominal pain, and spontaneous white sweat. This is termed "Stomach-injury Hematemesis" (Shangwei Tuxue).
The reason this formula can treat Stomach-injury Hematemesis is that its efficacy best regulates the Zhongwan region, separates and benefits Yin and Yang, and stabilizes the blood vessels. The scope of formulas and indications is extensive, similar to *Ju Fang* (Prescriptions of the Bureau), though it does not explicitly list hematemesis syndromes; students should understand this independently.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) Jiang (Ginger, processed) (equal parts)
Grind the above into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add one lamp of water, decoct until reduced to 0.7 parts, strain, and take at any time; or simply decoct Jiang-Gan Cao Tang (Ginger and Licorice Decoction) and drink it, which is also excellent. Formula see *Yangsheng Biyong*.
