Treats five types of malaria (malaria) and eight types of pi masses (abdominal masses).
Monocot garlic (any quantity, cut seven holes in each clove, insert seven seeds of Euphorbiae Lathyridis Herba (Daji, 大戟) with the skin removed, wrap in wet paper and roast until soft, then grind into a paste; note: this refers to Daji, not common garlic), Clove, Tangerine Peel, Aucklandia Root, Long Pepper, Black Pepper.
Grind the above ingredients into powder in equal proportions, use the garlic paste as a binder to form pills, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. Before taking the medicine, chew a small amount of salt to generate saliva, swallow two pills dry, gradually increase to three or five pills, and take them before going to bed.
The "Guang Wuxing Ji" records that during the Yonghui era of Emperor Gaozong of Tang, a monk named Weize suffered from yige (dysphagia/choking syndrome) and could not eat. He told his disciples, "After I die, you may open my chest and throat to see what is inside." He died shortly after speaking. The disciples indeed opened his chest and found an object resembling a fish with two heads, covered in fleshy scales throughout. When placed in a vessel by the disciples, it jumped incessantly. Various flavors were tested on it, but it dissolved upon contact. At that time, during summer, Isatis indigotica plants were abundant for making indigo dye. A certain monk put some indigo dye into the vessel; the creature ran around inside the vessel and soon turned into water. This was a sheng jia (living mass formed by pathological products), not comparable to the five types of yegge. Later generations mistakenly used indigo to treat yegge.
Patients suffering from the five types of ge (obstruction syndrome) present with qi stagnation in the chest, unblocked body fluids, difficulty swallowing food, emaciation, and shortness of breath; this is called Youge (Worry Ge). Fullness and excess in the Zhongwan area, acid reflux when swallowing, indigestion, and constipation characterize Si Ge (Pensive Ge). Reversal fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, blockage preventing swallowing, tendon spasm during vomiting, and aversion to the smell of food define Nuge (Angry Ge). Heat in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), mouth and tongue ulcers, heavy and fatigued limbs, frequent low-grade fever, chest bi pain radiating to the back, and inability to eat much constitute Xige (Joyful Ge). Abdominal distension and fullness, coughing with rebellious qi, cold sensation below the abdomen, borborygmus surrounding the navel, and pain preventing eating are known as Kongge (Fear Ge). All these result from the imbalance of the five emotions, which agitate qi and damage the spirit, leading to disharmony of Yin and Yang, knotting between the chest and diaphragm. The pathology lies below the Danzhong acupoint, hence the name Five Ge; if located in the pharynx, it is called Five Yegge. The treatment method for these five diseases is the same.
This prescription treats obstruction due to sorrow, anger, and excessive thinking, as well as symptoms triggered by consuming cold foods. The patient suffers from heart pain, dyspnea, stabbing pain radiating to the back, hardness and enlargement below the heart resembling cotton fluff, tight pain inducing vomiting (relief occurs after vomiting), and inability to ingest food or drink. Severe cases manifest as cold extremities and shortness of breath; or rapid breathing with asthma and vomiting/rebellious qi. This formula addresses all these conditions.
Ophiopogon Tuber (heart removed), Roasted Licorice Root (each 5 liang), Ginseng Root (4 liang), Sichuan Peppercorn (stir-fried until oil appears), Polygala Tuber (heart removed and stir-fried), Asarum Root (aerial parts removed), Cinnamon Twig (3 liang each), Prepared Ginger (2 liang), Prepared Aconite Root (1 liang).
Grind the above into powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of bullet seeds. Allow to dissolve in the mouth; take three times during the day and twice at night. The chest should feel warm; recovery occurs within seven days. Alternatively, form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds and take 20-30 pills with rice soup. The "Yannian Fang" suggests adding Ophiopogon Tuber, Licorice Root, and Ginseng Root by one liang each during summer. The "Jingxin Lu" recommends replacing Cinnamon Twig with Evodia Fruit to treat heart pain triggered by cold, a sensation of a foreign body in the throat that cannot be vomited out or swallowed down, and reduced appetite; this can be taken at any time.
