Treatment for complicated typhoid (Shanghan) resulting from improper management. After the recovery from typhoid, if mental spirit remains unanchored for a long time and speech becomes erroneous or confused; or if there is tidal fever with flushed cheeks, alternating chills and fever resembling malaria, lethargy, and persistent illness, all these are caused by excessive sweating and purging, leading to toxin accumulation in the Pericardium (Xinbao).
Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, half liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, each half liang).
The above ingredients are crushed into a coarse powder. Take five qian per dose, add one and a half zhan of water, decoct until seven parts remain, strain, and take warm. Administer three to four times daily. If there is heart vexation and thirst, provide small amounts of water gradually.
Treatment for typhoid where regulation was disordered, causing toxic qi to knot internally, resulting in chest and abdominal distension and fullness, restlessness in sitting and lying down, prolonged non-recovery, mania, delirious speech, obstruction of both large and small intestines, or recurrent vomiting and regurgitation.
Niu Dan (Bovis Gallus, from a yellow ox in the twelfth lunar month: fill with Tian Nan Xing powder, tie tightly, hang in a ventilated place away from direct sunlight until dry).
The above ingredient is ground into fine powder. Take half a liang of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), decoct with water to make seven-tenths of a zhan of liquid, mix with two qian of the powder, and take while hot. Shortly after, administer more hot Renshen decoction. If the patient falls asleep and passes yellow-black foul stools, this indicates efficacy.
Treatment for critical cases of typhoid due to disordered regulation that physicians could not treat; as well as epidemic diseases where no sweat has occurred for six or seven days, pulse is surging and rapid, face is red, eyes are staring, body is hot and vexed, with delirious speech and urge to run, extreme thirst; or trismus (lockjaw), with scattered essence and soul, but if the epigastrium remains warm, open the mouth, and pour medicine down the throat, life can be restored.
Treatment for Yang Du (Yang Toxin) manifesting as macular eruption.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, each two liang), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Fudi Mei (Furnace Bottom Coal, separately ground), Liang Chen (Dust from Beams, separately ground), Xiaomai Nu (Wheat Sprouts/Immature Wheat, separately ground), Zaotu Mo (Soot from Chimney Flues, each one liang, separately ground).
Grind the above ingredients into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of bullet seeds. Grind one pill in fresh cold water and ingest. For those with thirst, give ice water to drink completely; shortly thereafter, they will feel cold, and upon the cessation of coldness, sweating will occur and the disease will resolve. If after a significant passage of time (sun moving five chi) there is still no sweat, follow the previous method and take one pill to resolve the condition. This should only be administered when the patient is extremely thirsty; do not use if there is no thirst.
Hu Huo Syndrome (Fox-Gu Syndrome): The patient is silent and desires sleep but cannot close their eyes, dislikes food and drink, and the complexion alternates between red, white, and black. The teeth appear dull, the tongue is coated white, voice is hoarse, and the throat is dry. This occurs because after a severe illness, the intestines and stomach are empty, allowing three types of parasites to seek food and erode the five Zang organs. If the parasites erode the throat, it is called "Guo" (Huo), characterized by hoarseness; if they erode the lower part, it is called "Hu" (Fox), characterized by dry throat. One should examine whether there are sores on the upper lip, which indicates worm erosion of the internal organs; if there are sores on the lower lip, it indicates worm erosion of the anus.
