*Waitai Miyao* records: The family prescription of Chancellor Cui and the empirical formula of Bao Lu are both included, yet they contain errors. The edition by Qunyou in Piling is the most detailed; I have collated various versions to compile this book. It is far more meticulous than ancient formulas. Treating patients according to this method has never failed to be effective; often, a single moxibustion session results in cure. When I was in Yicheng, suffering from prolonged illness and emaciation, I also used this method and recovered.
Preface by Cui Zhiti, Vice Director of the Secretariat in the Tang Dynasty.
All sentient beings receive their vital qi, which is derived from the Five Elements. If health preservation violates proper principles, the Six Diseases will be inflicted upon them. As recorded extensively by Qibo and Huangdi, there are abundant ancient classics where attacking pathogens and performing moxibustion are practiced together, demonstrating this technique clearly. Bone-steaming disease is also known as "Chuan Shi" (passing corpse/inheritable disease), "Gui Zhu" (ghost afflication), "Fu Lian" (repeated connection), and "Wu Gu" (innocent victim). In men, it stems from phlegm-stagnation (Pi Qi); in women, it originates from blood and qi disorders. Regardless of age, many contract this disease; among infants and young children, transmission causes even greater suffering. Its manifestations include dry and erect hair, masses that may aggregate or disperse, abdominal lumps, or small nodules on both sides of the back of the neck, sometimes numbering five or six. There may be night sweats during sleep, dreams of sexual intercourse with ghosts, clear vision but spiritual confusion. Previously, thirteen individuals were cured, totaling over two hundred cases. As for fox bone and otter liver, these are merely hearsay from the past; gold teeth and copper noses rarely show efficacy. This formula is superior for supporting critical emergencies, not only treating bone-steaming but also addressing qi disorders, wind disorders, miasma, consumption, evil pathogens, and stagnation. Since symptoms are diverse, moxibustion treatments cannot be fully listed. Here is a brief outline. To avoid transmission errors that might mislead future generations, I have provided detailed diagrams and shapes so that readers may easily understand, allowing this knowledge to spread everywhere.
