The so-called "deficiency vexation" (Xu Fan) refers to the symptom of emptiness and vexation in the heart. The blood and qi of the human body are divided into Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi), corresponding to Yin and Yang respectively. Only when Ying and Wei flow smoothly and harmoniously can Yin be peaceful and Yang be secure, thereby preventing internal heat and deficiency vexation in the heart.
It treats cases following severe diseases from Cold Damage (Shanghan) or after vomiting and diarrhea from Huoluan (Cholera-like disease), where there is deficiency vexation in the heart, internal heat, and inability to resolve.
Prescription: Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf), Maidong (Ophiopogon Root, core removed), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 0.5 liang).
The above herbs are chopped. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 sheng of water and 5 slices of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to 0.8 sheng, strain, and take warm. No specific time restriction.
It treats cases caused by deficiency labor and excessive worry/thought leading to spermatorrhea, white turbidity, and inner deficiency vexation with restlessness.
Prescription: Xiaocao (Herba Smilacis Chinae), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, rhizome removed), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, rhizome removed, soaked in wine), Suanzaoren (Ziziphus Seed, stir-fried, shell removed, each 1 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, each 0.5 liang).
The above herbs are chopped. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 sheng of water and 5 slices of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to 0.8 sheng, strain, and take warm. No specific time restriction.
It treats irritability and heat discomfort after Cold Damage or after latent summerheat, as well as irritability and heat due to deficiency labor. (See this formula in the chapter "Treatment of Laozhai under the Section of Deficiency Damage").
Regarding epilepsy, examinations of various medical texts reveal different names, making it difficult to record them all comprehensively. Separate records mention five types of epilepsy; the first is called "Ma Xian" (Horse Epilepsy), characterized by sounds resembling a horse's neigh during attacks; [text missing/fragmented]; the third type involves dizziness, falling backward, deviation of mouth and eyes, upward rolling of eyeballs, convulsions of hands and feet, and rigidity of the back and spine, followed by... [text missing] agitation. Disharmony of visceral qi leads to stagnation and generation of phlegm-saliva, blocking the meridians, thus causing these symptoms. This condition may arise from fright experienced in the womb, or from irregular eating habits that disrupt visceral qi. Treatment should be applied according to the specific cause.
Another discussion states: Epilepsy occurring before the age of ten is termed "Xian". Generally, its origin lies in three categories: Feng Xian (Wind Epilepsy), Jing Xian (Fright Epilepsy), and Shi Xian (Food Epilepsy). Various forms of epilepsy evolve from these three. If not treated early, it becomes a chronic, stubborn disease. The manifestation of an attack includes sudden collapse to the ground, deviation of mouth and eyes, upward rolling of eyeballs, or hand... [text missing]. Do not... [text missing].
It treats Wind Epilepsy, regardless of age, characterized by gradually frequent attacks accompanied by vomiting of phlegm-saliva.
Prescription: Fei Chi Tou (Head of Owl, calcined to charcoal, one piece), Zhusha (Cinnabar, 5 qian, finely ground), Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit, 5 pods, fried with lard).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Use rice paste to form pills the size of mung beans. Take 15 pills per dose, increasing up to 20 pills if necessary, swallowed with rice gruel. No specific time restriction.
