[M Xu Shouzhen's *Tanchan Yicang Mulu*] One volume (originally included in *Qingnang Zazuan Jijiu Xianfang*, divided into three volumes). Extant.
Preface by Xu Shouzhen: Treating diseases is most difficult when it comes to women. Among women's diseases, pregnancy and childbirth are the most critical. Why are they so critical? Because the well-being of the entire family depends on the survival of mother and child. Therefore, Sun Simiao's *Qianjin Fang* places the section on women at the beginning of its compilation. This reflects Master Sun's rigorous and meticulous approach. There are numerous prescriptions for pregnancy and childbirth in the world, but many suffer from being cumbersome, obscure, or expensive. Cumbersome prescriptions are hard to prepare in emergencies; obscure ones are hard to find in remote villages; expensive ones are unaffordable for poor families. These three drawbacks mean that although not due to a lack of benevolence by scholars, only one in a thousand people might benefit. The current compilation is divided into three categories, with miscellaneous diseases appended at the end. Although it cannot be as comprehensive as other texts, it avoids being cumbersome, obscure, or expensive, and covers most critical conditions of pregnancy and childbirth. Thus, in emergencies, even in remote villages or among the poor, these remedies can be easily obtained. Even simple herbs can be effective, unlike the aforementioned difficulties. Those who use this book will realize it is a precious treasure for the inner chambers. Preface by Xu Shouzhen of Jinchuan.

Preface by Yuanran Daozhe of Zhanggong: The efficacy of this *Ji Yin Fang* is miraculous and cannot be fully described. Recently, my mother fell ill. After seeking many doctors without effect, I met a Buddhist monk specializing in gynecology. I obtained his medicine, and before finishing the dose, she recovered. I thanked him with incense and asked for his formula. He only gave me *Yixiang Sishen San*, *Puhuang Heishen San*, and *Xi Wan*. I longed for the complete formula but never obtained it. Later, my teacher, Zhao Gong of Yuanyang, showed me the complete formula during a discussion on the Dao. It turned out to be from the same source as the monk's specialized formulas. I sighed at the fortune of encountering specific efficacies at different times. Having used it to care for my parents and occasionally to help others, I have seen many successes. The medication is well-balanced and has fixed principles. As long as one prescribes based on syndrome differentiation, the results are miraculous. Wishing to benefit more people, I commissioned its printing to spread widely, hoping all the sick may survive. This is my wish. Written in the first month of Dingchou year of Hongwu era by Yuanran Daozhe of Zhanggong.

Preface by Gao Bin: Medicine is a minor art, yet it possesses the merit of benevolence. Gentlemen may not practice it themselves, but they do not discard it. Especially since it concerns the heavy responsibility of continuing the lineage and the commonality of human life, embodying supreme principles and education. My family, since my ancestor Fun'an Fujun, has been strong in collecting books, encompassing various schools. We obtained this manuscript titled *Bianchan XuZhi*, likely a medical text. Used in our home and shown to others, it has always been beneficial. I have known it for a long time. My late father once said, "Ancient times had prenatal education; this is close to it." I often wished to disseminate it widely but failed. This summer, my elder brother Maozhai proofread and collated it personally, sending it from a thousand miles away, saying, "This is our father's last wish." Finally completed. I reflect that childbirth, though a condition every household faces, is not always managed well by family physicians. Moreover, secrets kept within the inner chambers, far from suspicion, involve details of daily life and hygiene that external doctors cannot anticipate. However, a mistake in principle endangers both mother and child, leading to great tragedy. This is no ordinary phlegm disease. This book is suitable for every household to keep, and it is not cumbersome. If one follows its advice and exercises caution, those described as having good appearance and exceptional talent will indeed be born. Honoring my father's wish, this benevolent act warrants publication. I share it with everyone. Please try it; you will see remarkable results. Recorded by Gao Bin, Jinjiang, Jinshi, Civil Official, Magistrate of Ruian, in the upper ten days of the eleventh month of Gengshen year of Hongzhi era.

General Discussion: Observing all things, mountains always have vegetation, fields always grow grain, and humans always reproduce. The key lies in proper nourishment. With proper nourishment, barren land becomes fertile, and thin land becomes rich. Why worry about vegetation not flourishing? Why worry about grain not bearing fruit? Humans are the same. If one is physically strong but indulges desires without restraint, weakness and decline will eventually follow. If one is constitutionally weak but practices proper self-care, completeness and solidity can ultimately be achieved. It is not just that youth is vigorous and old age declines, or early maturity leads to late exhaustion. In nurturing and protecting, one cannot reverse autumn and winter to restore spring and summer. Once, the famous physician Luo Tianyi, in the spring of Renxu year, saw peach and plum trees blooming when snow was thick. An old gardener ordered his family to shake snow off the trees and burn grass underneath. That year, other fruits were sparse, but this garden had a bumper harvest. Thus, the Qi of heaven and earth can still be influenced by human effort. How then could there be no technique applicable to the human body? Yu Qiao, not ashamed of his ignorance, accumulated what he heard daily, combined theories from officials and practitioners, verified against ancient and modern masters' discussions, and wrote *Tiaoli Jingxue, Zhizhi Zhenyuan*. This includes three treatises on male and female medication, four diagrams of yin-yang deficiency and excess, thirty-five combined methods, and attached secret empirical formulas, titled *Guangsi Yaoyu*. It is precise, clear, and hides nothing. Believing in this, one will see that there are no men who cannot be fathers and no women who cannot be mothers, and the blessing of abundant offspring will be common in every house.

Wan Quan said: I wrote *Guangsi Jiyao*. First, cultivate virtue to accumulate blessings. Second, reduce desires to preserve true essence. Third, choose a partner to prosper descendants. Fourth, regulate the primal Qi to eliminate disease. Fifth, coordinate timing to harmonize spirit. Following these is the way to have children. Like praying to mountain and water spirits, responses come to those with virtue and few desires, where heaven and earth interact and intentions connect secretly. Without such virtue, seeking luck in the dark is unlikely to avoid heaven's displeasure.

Xu Chunfu said: Women's diseases, regulating menstruation, pregnancy, and childbirth are the most important, significantly different from men. Calling it merely "Gynecology" might imply neglecting this aspect. Other miscellaneous diseases are mostly similar to men. Here, I specifically compile *Taichan XuZhi* (One Volume) at the front and analyze miscellaneous syndromes (Two Volumes) at the back, so readers know the priority and weight.

Preface by Wang Qu: Who collected *Zhongsi Guangyu*? Xu Ruyuan collected and transmitted it to the public. Ruyuan was the posthumous son of He Shan, former steward of Xiang Prince, my old friend. Born intelligent, he studied classics under Ye Guangshan, a Imperial Student. Later, due to frequent illness, he studied medicine with my clan nephew Zi Liang. Zi Liang was renowned for his medical skills. Ruyuan, a Confucian mastering medicine, refined his skills easily. His heart was always focused on helping others, not seeking profit, which is commendable. He frequently visited me, asking about pulse theory from *Suwen*, pathogenesis, treatment methods, and books by Liu, Li, Zhang, and Zhu. Ruyuan analyzed them directly, answering questions fluently without hesitation. This shows his medicine has roots and lineage, unlike contemporary vulgar doctors who memorize materia medica to treat disease or stick to ancient formulas to medicate people. Medical books from ancient Huangdi and Qibo's *Lingshu* and *Suwen*, through Han, Tang, Song, to our Ming Dynasty, number over two hundred. Ruyuan investigated their subtleties, narrated and compiled them, naming it *Gujin Yitong*. Anything related to medicine is comprehensively detailed, truly the grand synthesis of all physicians. Reading *Zhongsi Guangyu*, I found discussions on origin and conclusion, yin deficiency, and menstruation regulation, showing much merit in promoting life. I appreciate his insightful, logical, and earnest emphasis on lineage. If practiced, it may indeed yield abundant offspring. His intention is benevolent. Hu Yunfeng said: A doctor who is also a Confucian is a enlightened doctor. Ruyuan is such a person. Ruyuan's name is Chunfu, pseudonym Sihe. Young and intelligent, knowledgeable and profound, especially in refining meaning, he is indeed a scholar renowned in the world. Preface by Wang Qu, Daoist of Hanxi, Xin'an.

Preface by Wang Kentang: Specialized prescriptions for women have existed for a long time. History records that Bian Que, passing Handan, heard of the importance placed on women's health, so he became a specialist in leukorrhea ("dai xia"), showing versatility. However, leukorrhea is just one disease. Regulating menstruation, miscellaneous syndromes, pregnancy, and delivery involve myriad sufferings and treatments. Can one specialist cover all? The world circulates Zhang Changsha's *Zabing Fanglun* (Three Volumes), with women occupying one part. Its prescriptions are miraculously effective, but unfortunately not widely disseminated. Master Sun Simiao's *Qianjin Fang* specifically places women first, perhaps based on the foundation of Qian and Kun in *I Ching* and the opening poem *Guan Ju* in *Shi Jing*. He stated: "Specifically teach children to study these three volumes of women's prescriptions, making them proficient, so in emergencies, what need for fear?" Yet, experts in medicine have not deeply endorsed this. In early Dazhong era of Tang, Bai Minzhong governed Chengdu. His family suffered death from dystocia. Seeking famous doctors, he received Zan Yin's *Beiji Yan Fang* (378 formulas), presented as *Chanbao*. In Song dynasty, Li Shisheng of Puyang obtained *Chalun* (21 essays), having theory but no formulas. Medical Professor Guo Jizhong added formulas. Chen Yanzewu evaluated its merits and flaws accurately in *Sanyin Fang*. Physician Du of Wu added to it, creating *Chanyu Baoqing Ji*. Chen Ziming of Linchuan felt previous books were scattered and incomplete, leaving doctors limited to simple approaches, unable to seek thoroughly, sometimes failing with one formula and giving up, or guessing without basis. Thus, he collected the best of various schools, added family empirical formulas, revised into chapters, eight sections, dozens of syndromes, totaling over 260 discussions with formulas. The structure was clear and admirable, creating *Daquan Liangfang*. With *Liangfang*, inner chamber care would be greatly perfected. However, its theories mostly borrowed from Chao Yuanfang's *Bingyuan*, attributing 90% to wind-cold, using hot drugs indiscriminately, without analyzing appropriateness. Recently, Xue Ji began annotating *Liangfang*, adjusting cold and heat, largely focusing on nourishing spleen/stomach and tonifying qi/blood, rather than just eliminating disease. He can be called a savior of the times. But Chen's revisions contained many ancient specialized secret formulas with clear origins, which should not be obscured. Xue arbitrarily deleted and altered them, causing ancient formulas to vanish. I deeply regret this. Therefore, in this compilation, I strive to preserve Chen's original form while deleting biased parts, keeping about 60-70%. I include all of Xue's theories, valuing his focus on nurturing righteousness, simplicity, and ease of learning, even for children. Regarding Hejian disciples, succeeding Zhang Changsha and excelling in medicine, their one-form-one-discussion style is unique and absent in other books. Carrying this to Handan, one might avoid being slighted. Matters like accumulating virtue for conception, safe delivery charms, and auspicious directions are not medical matters, so I omitted them. Manuscript completed with financial support from Military Commissioner Cai Xutai and Prefect Tu Zhenren, considering it a fraction of their benevolent governance. I accept. Preface by Wang Kentang: What people treasure and hide are usually gold, jade, and curiosities. Items related to worldly utility, how could they be hidden? Regarding worldly utility, military, agriculture, finance, and grain are paramount, none equaling medicine. Among people, the elderly, weak, and infants are significant, but none more so than pregnant women. For a person is one body, but a pregnant woman carries two. When the fetus is an embryo, its life and blood depend on the mother's womb. Mother's cold/heat is the fetus's cold/heat; mother's deficiency/excess is the fetus's deficiency/excess. Can doctors ignore this? Yet, inside curtains, wearing fertility charms, miscarriages happen frequently. Is it because pregnant households lack specialized experience or effective remedies? I often sigh at this. One day, Scholar Zhang Xinru visited, burning candles to check books. After reading dozens of chests, he noted *Yinchan* lacked a complete edition. We sighed through the night. I provided my collection for proofreading and printing. Alas, the compassion felt for infants applies even more to the fetus's foundation. Several syndromes and formulas are listed, detailing pregnancy and childbirth before and after birth, so resources are readily available. Is it not magnificent? How could I begrudge a title, letting it gather dust like curiosities? Niexi Jushi, Jinjiang Wang Kentang, Yutai, inscribed.
Preface by Zhang Shengkong: Previously in Kuacang, the local treasury held many rare books. The governor, Yu Gongguan from Yunjian, allowed me to read them all. In the separate chest for Yellow Emperor and Qi Bo texts, there were several obstetric manuals. I requested to take them home. Testing them on my wife, they were effective. Testing on relatives and friends, equally effective. Asking practitioners, they knew nothing. I wanted to print them to spread knowledge, but missed the imperial examination journey. Meanwhile, my wife died in childbirth. Misled by quacks, I failed to check properly. I deeply regretted this. Soon, my nephew Yuanwen's wife suffered the same error and died without rescue. Within a month, three or four village women died similarly. Alas, this is my fault. Holding pearls but not recognizing them. Passing Jintan, I sought Yu Tai Wang Gong's opinion and obtained his handwritten copy. Yuanwen printed it, naming it *Yinchan Quan Shu*. Talkers boast: "This book aids heaven and earth's creation." I dare not claim this. Nor does Yuanwen. We are like birds startled by the twang of a bow; seeing the wounded, old wounds ache. Like the Song man who got cream for cracked hands, wanting to heal all swimmers, we do not expect titles or divine skill. Ancients say: A humble person caring for benefiting others will surely achieve something. We bear this saying. The transmission by Yu Gong of Yunjian and revision by Wang Gong of Jintan are inconceivable merits. Henceforth, every household should keep a copy. Inscribed by Zhang Shengkong of Haiyang.

Preface by Chen Zhidao: Childbirth is normal for women, not a disease. Thus, no medicine or doctor is needed. When the melon is ripe, the stem falls. Naturally, there are no difficulties like breech or transverse presentations. Yet, suffering occurs yearly. Women raised in inner chambers, though educated, rarely hear practical advice. At labor, they entrust two lives to a midwife. If experienced and kind, she adjusts to circumstances, ensuring safety for mother and child—this is accidental success, not understanding principles. If foolish or malicious, ignoring procedures, acting rashly, causing panic or extortion, leading to death, I pity this. Unwilling for this truth to remain unknown, I based this book on ancient obstetric texts, supplemented by personal observation, compiling it for clarity. It emphasizes husbands discussing with wives beforehand, so they know protection upon conception and have confidence at labor. Midwives should also learn this to understand procedures, avoiding chaos and fatal errors. Thus, this book offers aid. Respectfully prefaced by Chen Zhidao of Qiyang.

Short Introduction: In my prime, I struggled with infertility. Using ancestral secret recipes, I fathered six sons. Each time my wife labored, I was terrified. In summer of Ren Shen year, delivering the fourth son was difficult. The elderly midwife was deaf and senile; mother and child nearly died. Fortunately, using castor beans, we survived. Thus, I vowed to compile *Taichan Husheng Pian* for publication, as the first step in saving mothers and infants. Procrastination delayed it until now, possessing only a booklet of tested formulas from my father. Meeting my friend Sun Zhongshi, who gave me *Chan Yao* (transmitted by Bu family of Siming), and searching extensively, I completed this compilation, exhausting my efforts. Protecting pregnancy starts from conception; prior syndromes are handled by gynecology specialists, which I ignore. Protecting infants ends a few days after birth; subsequent syndromes are handled by pediatrics specialists, which I ignore. Thus the story. Guangren Jushi, Li Changke, Xiaoyoushi.
