Formulas. Some are curable, while others are not. Every aspect is analyzed in detail, with utmost precision and thoroughness. Additionally, various formulas for spiritual medicines involving application, washing, sublimation, and refining are appended, all of which are subtle and exquisite. Inquiring about its source, it was said to be borrowed from Mr. Wang Juanlai, a Grand Historian (Taishi) from Huanggang, my fellow townsman. At that time, Mr. Wang was still studying at the Imperial Academy (Guoxue). His ancestor, Grand Historian An Shenggong, served as the Judicial Intendant (Sili Li) of Huai. A physician kept this book as a family secret and refused to share it lightly. When the physician encountered a bizarre injustice, An Shenggong vigorously advocated for his exoneration. Upon learning of this book, he requested to view it. The physician then presented it to him and expressed gratitude to Yun (possibly referring to a person or entity named Yunbao). After the ravages of war, this book survived. Mr. Juanlai brought it to the capital, intending to have it printed but failed to do so. Xu, who had long suffered from eye disease, temporarily borrowed it for verification and study, taking it back to his residence. It was mid-winter; facing a cold stove, he breathed on his frozen hands to thaw them, manually copying one volume. Cen Bifu, a friend from Xichuan of the same age, also manually copied one volume. They each took their copies and departed, storing them in their travel trunks.

Preface by Wang Xie: When I previously served in Huating, I had an ophthalmology compendium printed. The origins and history of that book were fully detailed in its preface, so I shall not repeat them here. Six years later, I obtained another manuscript copy. Compared with the earlier printed edition, its discussions were more precise, and its syndrome differentiation and formulas were complete and comprehensive, representing perhaps the most perfect version of the original text. Thus, I realized that the previous edition was imperfect. Although I wished to fill in the gaps and supplement the omissions by re-printing this book to rectify previous shortcomings, during the process of manual transcription and correction, I happened to obtain *Shenxi Yaohan* [Precious Mirror for Examination], compiled by the Ming dynasty scholar Chuan Renyu. Upon careful reading, I discovered that Chuan had entirely plagiarized this book, disguising it under a new guise, confusing the order of elements like hats and shoes, and reversing garments. Furthermore, he collected irrelevant verbose discussions and clichéd phrases, arranging and expanding them to dazzle and shock the reader, thereby burying the painstaking efforts of the predecessors and claiming them as his own. After printing, he used this mediocre and crude work to deceive the world.
