According to the *Nanhai Yao Pu* (Record of Medicines from the South Sea) and the *Hai Yao Ben Cao* (Compendium of Marine Drugs), their respective catalogs are found in the *Chongwen Zongmu* (General Catalog of the Imperial Library). It is unknown on what basis Li Shizhen combined them into one work; his statement is likely difficult to believe.
[Zhang Shi (Wenyi) *Bencao Kuoyao Shi*] Three volumes, lost
The *Yuhai* records: Zhang Wenyi of Former Shu wrote three volumes of *Bencao Kuoyao Shi* (Poems on Essentials of Materia Medica).
[Rihuazi Zhujia Bencao] Twenty volumes, lost
Zhang Yuxi stated: The *Rihuazi Zhujia Bencao* was written during the Kaibao era of the early Song Dynasty by a person from Siming. The author's surname is not recorded, only signed as "Rihuazi Daming." The book collects drugs commonly used in recent times from various materia medica, classifying them according to cold/heat properties, flavors, and categories such as flowers/fruits, insects, and beasts. Its remarks on contemporary drug use describe efficacy and characteristics in great detail, totaling twenty volumes.
Li Shizhen stated: Investigating the ten major surnames, the Da surname originates from Donglai. "Rihuazi" likely refers to someone named Da Ming. Some say his surname was Tian, but it is uncertain whether this is true.

In his preface, he states: The *Bencao* is essentially the history books of Confucianism. If Confucians do not read various histories, how can they know the virtue or worthlessness of talents, and the gains, losses, rise, and fall? If physicians do not read the *Bencao*, how can they know the names, virtues, properties, and flavors of drugs, and how to nourish life and prolong longevity? Referring to the classic texts of *Bencao*, from Shennong's *Shennong Bencao Jing* to the *Mingyi Bielu* by Famous Physicians, the Tang edition, the Shu edition, the newly revised edition, and the re-revised edition, including both earlier and later appendices, there are no fewer than 1,700 entries. Among these, those discussing warm and cool properties, and slow and urgent functions, number sixty [text implies a specific categorization or count]. For students in a small country, it is not easy to browse extensively. I received an imperial mandate to oversee education in Ruiyang. Thinking of facilitating learning for students in a small country, I selected drugs that appear in clinical practice, gathered them widely as a basis, and arranged them by rhyme and category according to the original text, hoping readers would find them easy to memorize and grasp the general outline. Thus, I had them carved on woodblocks and shared them with like-minded individuals. On the first day of the ninth month of the first year of the Yuanzhen era, Hu Shike of Yifeng Kedan wrote the preface.
