Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) is washed seven times with hot water, dried by baking, and ground into a fine powder. Liuhuang (Sulfur) should be bright and clean; it is pounded with a willow wood pestle and ground into an extremely fine powder.
Take the natural juice of fresh Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and boil it together with the above two ingredients. Add powder from dry bing (dried cake/bread), stir evenly, place in a mortar, and pound hundreds of times. Form pills the size of Cuscutae Semen (Dodder Seed). Each dose consists of 15 to 20 pills. They may be taken down with warm wine without ash or ginger soup, at the patient's discretion. For women, vinegar soup is used for administration. All doses should be taken on an empty stomach.
Hu notes: The above prescription belongs to the category of acrid-warm and drying-hot agents. Patients are suitable for taking it only when there is a lack of fire in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and constipation of the intestines and stomach. Otherwise, do not use it mistakenly.
Peel Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) into pieces about two cun long, the thickness of a little finger. Coat them with salt and insert them into the anus. Bowel movement will be unblocked immediately.
Hu notes: In the original text by Cui Shi, this method was originally used to remove heat accumulation and dry feces. However, using it to treat cold constipation is even more miraculous. This is because Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) has a hot nature that can overcome cold, and its acrid flavor can moisten dryness. It is better not to use salt. Since salt is inherently salty and cold, it is not suitable for cold constipation. If one wishes to employ "concordant treatment" (treating according to the disease's apparent nature), using salt is also acceptable.
Hu summarizes: The volume of prescriptions and discussions by ancient and modern famous experts listed above all expand upon the meanings not yet expounded by Zhang Zhongjing. If students sincerely study this book and, during clinical practice, carefully observe and comprehend, they will understand the mechanisms of interlaced yin and yang syndromes and the alternation of cold and heat victory and recovery in their minds and respond with their hands. Thus, there will be no difficult-to-treat Shanghan (Cold Damage) or Zhonghan (Mid-Cold) in the world.
