Dingxiang Pi (Cortex Caryophylli), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, processed, each 1 liang), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, processed, each 2 qian).
The above ingredients are ground into a fine powder. For each dose, take 2 qian. Add 1 zhan of water, 3 cun of Congbai (Scallion White), and 5 spikes of Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae). Decoct until the volume reduces to 70%. Strain the dregs and take hot. If after three doses the condition is not relieved, and the hands and feet remain cold with vomiting, add more Boshang Dingxiang Pi (Imported Cortex Caryophylli) and Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), each 2 qian.
Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 1 liang), Huoxiang (Herba Pogostemonis, 3 qian), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Gegen (Puerariae Radix, each 2 qian), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, 1 liang, processed).
The above ingredients are ground into a powder. For each dose, take 2 qian. Add 1 zhan of water and one piece of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, size of a date), crushed. Decoct together until the volume reduces to 70%. Strain the dregs and take hot. If after three doses the condition is not relieved, and the hands and feet remain cold with unceasing vomiting, add Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 0.5 liang), Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli, 0.5 liang), and Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, 0.5 liang). For each dose, add 3 cun of Congbai (Scallion White) and decoct for administration.
Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, half liang), Huoxiang Ye (Folium Pogostemonis, half liang), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, each 7.5 qian), Gegen (Puerariae Radix, 7.5 qian), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, 7 qian), Ganshengjiang (Dried Zingiberis Rhizoma, 2.5 qian).
The above ingredients are ground into a fine powder and made into pills using refined honey, sized like a bullet. For each dose, take one pill. Add 1 zhan of water, decoct until the volume reduces to 70%, and take hot along with the dregs. If after three doses the condition is not relieved, and there is coldness in the hands and feet with vomiting, add Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) and Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), each half liang.
Hu notes: The above three formulas are agents for warming and tonifying combined with resolving stagnation, applicable to Taiyin disease (Taiyin syndrome) and Yangming disease (Yangming syndrome).
Han Shi also has two Fangpu Wan (Magnolia Bark Pill) formulas, which also use Dingpi (Cortex Caryophylli), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), Fangpu (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Huoxiang (Herba Pogostemonis), etc. Both formulas additionally include Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), so their medicinal effects extend to the Shaoyin channel (Shaoyin meridian) and Jueyin channel (Jueyin meridian). One formula contains Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), while the other lacks Fangpu (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis); both are named Fangpu Wan, which is likely an error in transcription. ○ There is also Jupi Tang (Tangerine Peel Decoction), using Jupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Huoxiang (Herba Pogostemonis), Gegen (Puerariae Radix), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Fangpu (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), which is largely similar with minor differences to the previously mentioned Jupi Tang. There is also Baizhu Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction), using Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Fangpu (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens); all belong to warming-the-middle agents. These are not listed in full here.
