Note: The above formula is indicated for conditions such as emptiness of the Gate of Life (Mingmen). If treatment with the Eight-Ingredient Pill (Bawei Wan) fails to cure, this formula proves miraculously effective. The presenting symptoms have been detailed under the entry for the Eight-Ingredient Pill.
Since Zhang Zhongjing, formularies have filled the shelves. Yet those I have personally experienced and compiled number only slightly more than thirty; would this not be considered too brief? It is unknown that my effort in medicine has spanned half a lifetime, searching through the main themes of numerous books, and my life experience has involved consulting the roots of various diseases. Seeking the root from the branch, and formulating prescriptions based on the root, the formulations I could create are limited to this extent, hence what I have compiled is only this much. However, meridians and zang-fu organs encompass all diseases; methods of unblocking and tonifying, addressing excess and deficiency, are all complete within. Thus, although this collection of formulas is concise, it is by no means incomplete. Indeed, the principles of the world branch from one source into ten thousand manifestations; our study must trace the stream back to its source. In clinical practice, if one can, upon seeing these principles, clearly distinguish yin and yang, deficiency and excess as distinctly as the sun and moon; and upon administering treatment, apply tonification and sedation, cold and heat therapies with the immediacy of a drumstick striking a drum, then everyone will flock towards the path of simplicity, neglecting deep intricacies and complex considerations. This, while opening a direct shortcut for future learners, may inadvertently invite criticism of their superficiality and lack of depth, which contradicts the intention of making this work public.
