Li Feng (Leprosy), also known as Da Ma Feng (Giant Hemp Wind, referring to severe leprosy) or Lai disease, is caused by the contraction of the austere and killing qi of heaven and earth. The ancients called it Li Feng because its nature is fierce, violent, and terrifying. Once contracted, treatment must distinguish whether the pathology is located in the upper or lower body. If nodules (ge da) first appear predominantly on the upper body, the disease is in the upper part; if they first appear predominantly on the lower body, the disease is in the lower part. The human body fundamentally relies on Qi and Blood. Blood circulates with the movement of Qi. When Qi is injured, it becomes stagnant; Qi stagnation leads to Blood accumulation. Accumulated Blood that fails to circulate causes flesh to rot and worms to generate, resulting in nasal collapse and eyebrow loss. This is indeed a necessary consequence. However, when wind pathogen invades the body, there is a distinction between Qi level and Blood level. Qi-level invasion manifests mostly in the upper body, while Blood-level invasion manifests mostly in the lower body. Involvement of both upper and lower bodies indicates simultaneous Qi and Blood pathology. Treatment for this condition must assess whether to treat from above or below. However, the primary focus of treatment lies in the Yangming Meridian (Stomach and Large Intestine meridians), as Yangming governs the Stomach, which receives all substances. Given the severity of such infection, few can avoid death unless the physician possesses divine skill and the patient has iron will. Following therapeutic principles requires abstaining from rich and greasy foods, cutting off alcohol and sexual indulgence, and avoiding overwork. Failure to observe these restrictions may lead to temporary relief but inevitable recurrence, after which no medicine can save the patient.
A floating and rapid pulse indicates Wind-Heat; a floating and slippery pulse indicates Wind-Phlegm; a deep, slow, and forceless pulse indicates deficiency of both Qi and Blood, which is difficult to treat.
