A person drank excessively and became ill due to alcohol, experiencing discomfort in the chest and epigastrium with qi obstruction. He took numerous doses of Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) but achieved no effect whatsoever, leading to a loss of appetite. Subsequently, Tiaoqi San (Qi-Regulating Powder) was administered, which caused high fever. Thereafter, only Bohe Jian (Mint Decoction), Jisu Wan (Chicken-Su Pill), and Maren Wan (Hemp Seed Pill) were used, resulting in gradual recovery. It was then realized that the chest and epigastrium obstruction was caused by heat in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner).
Another individual, who had a strong preference for alcohol, contracted cold pathogens. After taking Buhuanjin Zhengqi San (Non-Exchanging Gold Qi-Regulating Powder), his internal heat intensified further, causing irritability, thirst, chest stuffiness, profuse sweating like rain, and aversion to cold. Later, Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was modified with Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit) and Shaoyao (Peony Root) to resolve the condition. Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) and Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) cleared heat; Zhike broadened the middle and regulated qi; Shaoyao harmonized Ying (Nutritive Qi) and stopped sweating, leading to an immediate cure. Thus, when a person addicted to alcohol falls ill, how can one rashly attempt warm medicines?
Jinti Roukun (Muscle twitching and tremors) is caused by excessive sweating. The ancients treated it with Zhenwu Tang (True Warrior Decoction). However, while Zhenwu Tang can stop sweating, it cannot stabilize muscle tremors. Kun refers to movement. Sweating leads to exterior deficiency, allowing external wind to enter the Couli (interstices). People know that wind causes movement, hence the trembling, but they do not realize that excessive sweating damages Blood. When Blood is deficient, it fails to nourish the sinews, causing the sinews to become more tense and the limbs and bones to tremble more severely. The treatment should not employ wind-dispelling and dispersing agents, but rather use Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Fuling (Poria), and Gancao (Licorice Root) as the main formula, with Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung) as an assistant, decocted together with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Wumei (Dark Plum). This yields miraculous effects. These herbs specifically generate Blood; generating Blood is the means to consolidate sweat. If there is constipation and dryness, add a small amount of Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) to guide out the stagnation. Once the blood vessels are harmonized, calmness is restored in the blink of an eye.
Liu Baoyun from Lujiang stated: The prescriptions in *Chanbao* (Precious Prescriptions for Obstetrics) are very detailed, yet they lack a syndrome of postpartime Wind-stroke with opisthotonos. Postpartum Wind-stroke occurs because during pregnancy, excessive consumption of raw and cold foods dampens the Spleen and Stomach. After nursing and lying in bed, body fluids are depleted internally. Stepping on the ground too early and improper clothing allow Wind pathogens to invade the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian due to deficiency. Symptoms include fever and headache, or sometimes no fever, panting with phlegm and cough, disordered speech, gradually tightening of the jaw, slight movement of the ten fingers resembling grasping objects, stiffness of the neck and back, muteness or screaming, fixed gaze, involuntary bowel movements, a body arched like a bow, and immobility upon turning. In such cases, none of ten survive. *Ren Shu* (Book of Human Life) states this is Taiyang Fa Jing (Taiyang Spasm). Whenever fever appears immediately after childbirth, careful observation is required. If the lips are tight, the tongue is stiff, and fingers move slightly, Wind-stroke medications should be administered urgently. Medications include Guijing Tang (Angelica and Schizonepeta Decoction) and Du Huo Jiu (Notopterygium Wine). Attached to the Dampness section. Dujing San (Schizonepeta and Angelica Powder), Fangfeng San (Saposhnikovia Powder), and Xuming Tang (Continuing Life Decoction) are found in the attached Women's Prescriptions. Suitable for both men and women.
