For those without sweat, induce sweating; the primary method is to disperse pathogenic factors, supplemented by tonification. For those with sweat, stop sweating; the primary method is to support healthy Qi, supplemented by dispersing. The pulse in malaria is mostly wiry (Xian). A wiry and rapid pulse indicates heat; a wiry and slow pulse indicates cold. In prolonged illness, the pulse may be extremely deficient, appearing slightly wiry but not striking the fingers upon palpation, though careful observation may reveal it. A wiry pulse like the edge of a knife indicates death (poor prognosis); a wiry and small pulse indicates life (good prognosis).
