E Ni (hiccups) is named for the sound produced when Qi rushes straight up from below the umbilicus and exits through the mouth. In ancient times it was called Yue, now it is called E. It is generated by Stomach Cold; cold Qi rebels upward causing hiccups. Etiologies include Phlegm, Qi Deficiency, Fire, excessive food intake blocking the chest preventing Qi ascent and descent, phlegm obstructing above while fire rises below preventing Qi extension, or Taiyang-Shaoyang transition diseases/heat diseases where Yangming interior excess persists without purgation, preventing clear Qi from ascending and turbid Qi from descending, leading to blocked Qi mechanism and hiccups. These are all Excess syndromes.
Prescription: Treats Phlegm-induced cough and hiccups.

Preparation: Add 5 slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water and drink. Alternatively, decoct Ren Shen Lu (Ginseng Stalk) in water to induce vomiting.
