The pulse on the left hand is rapid with excessive heat; a choppy yet forceful pulse indicates dead blood (stasis). The pulse on the right hand is full and indicates phlegm accumulation; a large pulse signifies a chronic condition, representing deficiency of both Qi and Blood, with turbid Phlegm failing to descend. This is a situation where Phlegm is above and Fire is below, with Fire flaming upward stirring up Phlegm. "Xuan" (vertigo) refers to darkness before the eyes; "Yun" (dizziness) refers to a spinning sensation. Without Phlegm, vertigo cannot occur. The Classics state: All wind-induced dizziness and vertigo belong to Liver Wood. Wind causes sweating, Cold causes pulling pain, Summer-heat causes heat and stifling, Dampness causes heaviness and stagnation; these four pathogenic factors invade when the body is deficient, leading to dizziness and vertigo. Alternatively, emotional depression generates Phlegm, which moves due to Fire and ascends with Qi in rebellion; this is deficiency caused by seven emotions leading to dizziness and vertigo. Excessive sexual indulgence prevents the Kidney from grasping Qi and returning it to its source, causing all Qi to rush upward in rebellion; this is Qi deficiency leading to dizziness and vertigo. Vomiting blood or epistaxis, and uterine bleeding, indicate that the Liver fails to contain Ying (Nutritive) Qi, causing blood to flow recklessly out of its channels; this is Blood deficiency leading to dizziness and vertigo.

For treating headache and vertigo due to Blood deficiency, applicable to those who have lost excessive amounts of blood. See Headache Section.
Another prescription: For unbearable dizziness and vertigo, use Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome) stir-fried with wine, ground into powder, and taken mixed with rice soup. Also treats headache, used according to deficiency or excess conditions.
Promotes expectoration of Phlegm, clears Qi, descends Fire. Applicable when the right-hand pulse is full and large, indicating Phlegm accumulation.

Another prescription: For women suffering from headache wind and vertigo, feeling like riding in a cart or boat, with dry eyes and numb hands, hair loss, poor memory, and irregular mood, all are caused by old Phlegm in the chest. Use Guitisan (Melon Dispersant Powder) to induce vomiting. See Stroke Section.
