For severe injuries, use this prescription to decoct a soup for washing, then apply the medicine.
Raw Scallion (cut into sections; another version uses Raw Ginger) Schizonepetae Spica (crushed) Angelica Pubescentis Radix (Tu Dang Gui)
Decoct the above three ingredients into a soup, and wash the affected area with it while warm.
(For external application)
Treats contusions and traumatic injuries, where bones and tendons are fractured or dislocated. First, decoct scallion soup or medicinal juice for washing. Perform traction, reduction, and massage until the bones are aligned and level. Then, arrange large pieces of material roughly the size of a finger around the circumference, secure tightly by binding with small rope three times, and change once every three days. Wash again as before, change the dressing, and apply bandages. Do not remove the splints. Protect the injury to prevent movement. Only remove the splints when the bone has healed firmly, so that recovery will be like before. If injured by knives or arrows, or bitten by insects and beasts causing ulcerated sores, lack of muscle regeneration, or swelling and pain from bumps and falls, all should be treated by mixing the powder with ginger juice for topical application. If there is an open wound, leave it open and fill/apply Fengliu San (Wind-Dispersing Powder).
Pangolin Scales (six liang, stir-fried until yellow or calcined to retain efficacy) Clove Bark (six liang) Angelica Pubescentis Radix (two liang) Suo Long Gan (half liang, for dispersing blood) Loquat Leaf Root (deprived of hairs, half liang; Yunnan Loquat Root)
Calcine and grind the above into fine powder. Mix with ginger juice and water, or grind with Rehmanniae Radix juice for use.
Treats contusion injuries and fractures, broken bones and damaged tendons, pain and edema, abdominal stasis of blood infusing into the four limbs, restlessness and fullness. Carbuncles and sores on the back, necrosis of muscles and flesh. Qi pain. Whole-body pain and bi-syndrome. Turbid meridians, onset of wind-lao syndrome, soreness and pain in all joints. All are suitable for taking this medicine. Take half a pill each time, ground down with non-ash wine. Women should not take it. For injuries in the upper body, take after meals; for injuries in the lower body, take on an empty stomach; for severe injuries, do not restrict according to this rule, follow this pattern for others.
Arisaema Cum Bile (one jin, soaked in ginger juice overnight, dried) Paeoniae Radix (one jin, red or white both acceptable) Drynariae Rhizoma (one jin, dried; those growing on rocks are best) Sojae Semen Praeparatum (retained nature, take half a jin) Draco Sanguis (six liang, separately ground) Asari Radix et Rhizoma (ten liang, remove seedlings and leaves, take ten liang) Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (one jin) Momordicae Fructus (half a jin, remove shell, finely ground to replace) Frankincense (half a jin, separately ground; if unavailable, substitute with three times the amount of Commiphora Myrrha) Qing Sang Tan (ten jin: select green mulberry wood as thick as an arm, remove bark and leaves, heat in charcoal fire until red smoke rises, quench with sour vinegar to make charcoal)
Grind the six ingredients—Mulberry, Chestnut, Bean, Drynaria, Arisaema, and Peony—into powder, mix with the remaining medicines, grind into fine powder, and combine with glutinous rice paste boiled in rice vinegar. Pound in a mortar for one thousand strikes, then gather people to quickly form pills. If the process is too slow, the mixture will crumble. Air-dry in shade for half a month, then bake over fire or sun-dry for one day. Large pills weigh six wen; wet pills weigh three wen. When wet, smear lacquer on hands. Take two or three pills and coat them with lacquer as an outer layer. Take half a pill each time. When preparing this medicine, do not let "four-eyed" people see it. More importantly, avoid letting chickens, dogs, or women see it, otherwise the efficacy will be diminished.
