The *Huoren Shu* (Book of Vitality) states: For pregnant women suffering from Shanghan (Cold Damage), Zhang Zhongjing did not provide specific treatment methods. Medication requires caution and avoidance, and it cannot be treated in the same manner as for ordinary women.
It further states: For women with pregnancy complicated by Shanghan, the properties of medicines must be cooling. One must absolutely avoid using herbs such as Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), and Taoren (Peach Seed).
Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with Banxia removed is named Huanglong Tang (Yellow Dragon Decoction); this modification was made specifically for pregnant women to remove Banxia. Generally, before delivery, one should first stabilize the fetus; after delivery, one should first nourish the blood, and then administer medications for Shanghan. If the illness subsides slightly, stop the medication; do not complete the full dosage. This is a general principle. The Yellow Emperor asked about treating pregnant women with toxic drugs. Qibo replied: "If there is an existing pathogen, there will be no destruction [of the mother or fetus]." For large accumulations and masses, they may be attacked, but stop when the pathogenic factor has diminished by more than half. Excessive treatment leads to death.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats pregnancy complicated by Shanghan with headache and high fever, and painful limbs/joints, using Shigao Qianhu Tang (Gypsum and Peucedanum Decoction) consisting of seven ingredients.
It also treats pregnancy complicated by Shanghan with headache, high fever, mental restlessness, vomiting, and inability to eat, using Sheng Lugen Tang (Fresh Reed Rhizome Decoction) consisting of four ingredients.
It also treats pregnancy complicated by Shanghan where, after taking decoctions, headache and high fever persist; one should use Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) to wipe the body.
It also treats heat diseases during pregnancy: Congbai (Scallion White) five liang, Chi (Fermented Soybean) one sheng, boiled and taken to induce sweating.
It further states: For severe heat and mental restlessness, use Gegen Juice (Kudzu Root Juice) two sheng, divided into three doses. Administer one dose every time the patient walks approximately five li.
The *Huoren Shu* suggests that for stabilizing the fetus in pregnancy complicated by Shanghan, Ejiao San (Donkey-hide Gelatin Powder) is suitable. Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is also suitable.
Pang Shi says: For pregnant women affected by seasonal pathogens, to prevent miscarriage, use Hutai Fulonggan San (Fetus-Protecting Dragon's House Earth Powder). Grind Fulonggan (Dragon's House Earth) into powder, mix with water, and apply to the umbilicus. Change when dry. Stop when the disease resolves.
He further states: In pregnancy complicated by Shanghan with extreme internal heat, to avoid harming the fetus, take chicken eggs, store them in a silk bag, submerge them at the bottom of a well until extremely cold, then break and swallow six or seven eggs.
He further states: In pregnancy complicated by Shanghan with severe high fever and fetal unrest, use 1.5 qian of Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) powder, mixed with Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and taken orally. If Zhuli is unavailable, use a decoction of Xiaomai (Wheat) and Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf) mixed with the powder.
He further states: After pregnancy complicated by Shanghan has been treated with diaphoretic and purgative drugs and the heat has subsided, to stabilize the fetus during this period, use Renshen Huangqi Tang (Ginseng and Astragalus Decoction).
The *Huoren Shu* states: For pregnancy complicated by Shanghan with aversion to cold and fever, induce sweating with Congbai Tang (Scallion White Decoction). (Boil Congbai and Shengjiang [Fresh Ginger] together and take continuously to induce sweat.)
It further states: For pregnancy complicated by Shanghan with headache, high fever, and limb/joint pain, use Qianhu Tang (Peucedanum Decoction). (From *Qianjin Fang*).
It further states: For pregnancy complicated by Shanghan or epidemic cold, with chills, trembling palpitations, or hiccups, use Sumu Tang (Sappan Wood Decoction). Guo Yong comments: Sumu (Sappan Wood) strongly invigorates blood and breaks stasis; it should be carefully studied and avoided.
It further states: For pregnancy complicated by Shanghan with headache, silence, loss of appetite, hypochondriac pain, vomiting/reversal, phlegm-q stagnation, as well as postpartum wind-strike, heat entering the Bao Palace (Uterus), alternating chills and fever resembling malaria, menstruation just starting or stopping, relapse due to overexertion after illness, and lingering residual heat, use Huanglong Tang (Yellow Dragon Decoction).
It further states: For pregnancy complicated by Shanghan with headache, aversion to cold, body heat, restlessness, limb pain, stiffness of the neck and back, and dry lips/mouth, use Chaihu Shigao Tang (Bupleurum and Gypsum Decoction).
It further states: For pregnant women with Shanghan, from the fourth to sixth day, presenting with abdominal distension/fullness, rising qi, unquenchable thirst, poor appetite, lower back pain, and heavy body, use Sanwu Zhishi Tang (Three-Ingredient Immature Bitter Orange Decoction).
It further states: For pregnant women with Shanghan with head/eye pain, high fever, and mental restlessness, use Xuanfuhua Tang (Inula Flower Decoction).
It further states: For pregnancy complicated by Shanghan with high fever, vomiting/reversal, headache, loss of appetite, and fetal unrest, use Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction).
It further states: For pregnant women developing macules that turn black, use Zhizi Daqing Tang (Gardenia and Isatis Decoction).
Pang Shi states: For pregnancy complicated by Shanghan with abdominal distension, constipation, and wheezing/urgency, use Qianniu San (Morning Glory Seed Powder). (Volume 15)
The *Huoren Shu* states: For women with postpartum wind-strike lasting ten-plus days without resolution, presenting with slight headache, aversion to cold, intermittent fever, hardness below the heart, dry retching, and sweating, use Yangdan Tang (Yang Dawn Decoction).
It further states: For postpartum wind-strike with fever, red face, wheezing, and headache, use Zhuye Fangfeng Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Saposhnikovia Decoction).
It further states: For women with wind-strike during confinement, with limbs suffering from vexatious heat and headache, administer Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction). If there is no headache but only vexation, administer Sanwu Huangqin Tang (Three-Ingredient Scutellaria Decoction).
Pang Shi states: For heat diseases in pregnancy with a dead fetus in the womb, use 1 liang of Lujiaoxie (Deer Horn Chips), one bowl of water, five stems of Congbai (Scallion White), and half he of Chi (Fermented Soybean). Decoct to one-sixth volume, strain, and take warm in two doses. Another prescription: Squeeze juice from Yimucao (Motherwort), drink half sheng, and the fetus will be expelled.
It further states: For miscarriage caused by Shanghan with failure of lochia discharge, abdominal distension, and suffocating fullness, use Dahuang Taoren Tang (Rhubarb and Peach Seed Decoction).
It further states: After miscarriage, if lochia stops due to steaming by heat, use Dihuang Yin (Rehmannia Infusion). Use one bowl each of Shengdihuang (Fresh Rehmannia Root) juice and Ouji (Lotus Root Juice), and one ladle of Shengjiang汁 (Fresh Ginger Juice). Mix evenly, take warm, divided into three or four doses. If there is slight chills, boil for twenty cycles and then take. It can also expel a dead fetus.
It further states: For post-Shanghan postpartum blood fainting approaching death, use Honghua San (Carthamus Powder).
It further states: Regarding all miscarriages due to Shanghan, in summer, vinegar-charcoal should be used sparingly, as many suffer from vexation, fainting, and death. Guo Yong comments: In cold months, charcoal is used more frequently.
It further states: For post-Shanghan postpartum evil blood rushing to the heart, causing confusion and dry mouth, use Shengjiang Xiaobian Yinzi (Fresh Ginger and Urine Drink). Mix one ladle each of Shengdihuang汁 (Fresh Rehmannia Juice), Ouji (Lotus Root Juice), and Xiaobian (Urine). Boil for two or three cycles, divide into three doses.
It further states: For post-Shanghan postpartum cases where lochia is bound by heat and fails to descend, presenting with vexation, distension, wheezing, and delirium, Dishang Tang (Tussuck Decoction) and Taoren Chengqi Tang (Peach Kernel and Magnolia Bark Decoction) are indicated.
It further states: For miscarriage due to Shanghan with vexation and extreme dryness/thirst, Shigao Tang (Gypsum Decoction) is indicated.
