Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 14 pieces, split) Xiang Chi (Fermented Soybean Seed, 4 liang, wrapped in cotton cloth)
Take the above two ingredients, add four sheng of water, and first decoct Zhi Zi until half a sheng remains (i.e., obtain 2.5 sheng). Then add Xiang Chi and decoct until one and a half sheng remains. Strain off the dregs and divide into two doses; take warm. If vomiting occurs after taking the medicine, stop taking the remaining dose.
After treatment with sweating, emesis, or purging, deficiency-heat vexation and insomnia occur. If severe, it manifests as tossing and turning and inner restlessness (ao nao); Zhi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) is the primary formula. If there is shortness of breath, Zhi Zi Gan Cao Chi Tang (Gardenia, Licorice, and Fermented Soybean Decoction) is used. If there is vomiting, Zhi Zi Sheng Jiang Chi Tang (Gardenia, Ginger, and Fermented Soybean Decoction) is used.
Following sweating, emesis, or purging, the Spleen-Stomach Qi is damaged, Stomach Qi rebels upward, and Ministerial Fire fails to descend, leading to deficiency-heat vexation and inability to sleep. When severe, stagnant pathogens fill the chest and heart, turbid Qi steams the Heart Spirit, causing tossing and turning and inner restlessness. Zhi Chi Tang induces vomiting to expel stagnant turbidity, allowing Yang to descend and vexation to cease. If there is shortness of breath, add Gan Cao (Licorice Root) to tonify Qi. If there is vomiting, add Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) to stop rebellion.
Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 14 pieces) Xiang Chi (Fermented Soybean Seed, 4 liang, wrapped in cotton cloth) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 2 liang)
Add 2 liang of Gan Cao to Zhi Chi Tang. Prepare according to the previous method. If vomiting occurs, stop taking the remaining dose.
Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 12 pieces) Xiang Chi (Fermented Soybean Seed, 4 liang, wrapped in cotton cloth) Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 5 liang)
Add 5 liang of Sheng Jiang to Zhi Chi Tang. Prepare according to the previous method. If vomiting occurs, stop taking the remaining dose.
For patients using Zhi Zi formulas, if they have a history of loose stools, do not administer.
Zhi Zi has a bitter-cold nature that drains the Spleen and Stomach and lubricates the Large Intestine. For any formula containing Zhi Zi, if the patient has inherent Spleen-Yang deficiency and slightly loose stools, it must not be administered.
The Shaoyin channel transforms from Cold Water into Ministerial Fire. In healthy individuals, Water and Fire interact, keeping Kidney water moist. In those with Yin excess, Water is abundant and Fire is weak, making Kidney Qi inherently cold. When disease is in the Taiyang exterior, Yang is constrained externally while internal Cold is activated. If mistaken treatments such as sweating, emesis, purging, or warm needle therapy are applied, Yang collapses, Earth (Spleen/Stomach) fails, Cold Water becomes uncontrolled, and Water Pathogens flood, leading to death swiftly. Supporting Yangming and suppressing Shaoyin is what skilled physicians should consider to prevent disaster.
In Taiyang disease, after sweating, perspiration continues incessantly. The patient fears wind, experiences difficulty urinating, slight stiffness in the four limbs, and difficulty flexing and extending them. Guizhi Jia Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Aconite Root) is the primary formula.
Wei-Yang escapes with sweat, and the skin and hair lose their ability to consolidate, causing incessant sweating. Exterior deficiency causes aversion to wind. Loss of sweat depletes the warming Qi in the blood; Liver Wood stagnates and cannot move fluids, causing difficulty urinating. Collapse of Yang and failure of Earth prevent warming and nourishing the four limbs, causing slight stiffness and difficulty in movement. The Kidney governs the five fluids, which enter the Heart to become sweat. Kidney Qi is the root of all Yang. Incessant sweating leaks and fails to store the Yang root within the Kidney. In Guizhi Jia Fuzi Tang, Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) unblocks Liver Wood stagnation, Shaoyao (Peony Root) consolidates Wind leakage, Jiang (Ginger), Gan Cao (Licorice), and Dazao (Jujube) tonify Spleen Essence and harmonize the Middle Jiao, and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) warms Kidney Water to benefit the Yang root.
