Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), Scutellaria Root with Foam (Shujin, Shujit), Oyster Shell (Muli), Dragon Bone (Longgu), Licorice Root (Gancao), Jujube (Dazao).
In Cold Damage (Shanghan) with a floating pulse. The physician used fire therapy to force sweating, resulting in the loss of Yang Qi (Wangyang - depletion of Yang energy). This inevitably leads to fright, mania, restlessness, and inability to lie still. This formula is indicated. A floating pulse in Cold Damage indicates the pathogen is at the exterior.
Because it does not refer to the removal of Peony Root.
Kudzu Root (Gegen), Ephedra Herb (Mahuang), Licorice Root (Gancao), White Peony Root (Shaoyao), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia), Jujube (Dazao).
When Taiyang (Sun-Yang) and Yangming (Yang-Ming) meridians are affected simultaneously. If there is no diarrhea but only vomiting, this formula is indicated. Taiyang exterior syndrome and Yangming interior syndrome occur concurrently. The pathogenic factor is severe. Exterior symptoms must include headache, lower back pain, muscle heat, eye pain, nasal dryness, and insomnia.
Kudzu Root (Gegen), Licorice Root (Gancao), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian).
In Taiyang disease, where Guizhi Tang syndrome exists, purgation was incorrectly applied, leading to diarrhea and a rapid pulse (Cu Mai - hurried pulse), indicating the exterior syndrome remains unresolved. With wheezing and sweating, this decoction is appropriate. For the unresolved exterior, the sweetness of Kudzu Root and Licorice Root is used to disperse; for the interior pathogen, the bitterness of Scutellaria Root and Coptis Rhizome is used to clear heat.
Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), White Peony Root (Shaoyao), Licorice Root (Gancao), Jujube (Dazao).
When Taiyang and Shaoyang (Lesser-Yang) meridians are affected simultaneously, and spontaneous diarrhea occurs, Huangqin Tang is administered. If vomiting occurs, Huangqin Jia Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Scutellaria Decoction plus Pinellia and Fresh Ginger) is given. In the concurrent involvement of Taiyang and Shaoyang, [the treatment aims to] direct rebellious Qi downward. The sweet and neutral nature of Licorice Root and Jujube is used to tonify and nourish the weakness of the Spleen and Stomach.
This is the preceding formula plus Pinellia Tuber (Banxia) and Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang).
Note: Pinellia Tuber is acrid and drying, capable of removing dampness and harmonizing the Spleen and Stomach greatly. Fresh Ginger is acrid and dispersing, capable of directing Qi downward and effectively resolving rebellious Qi stagnation. Therefore, these two herbs are considered the supreme remedies for vomiting.
Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), White Peony Root (Shaoyao), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), Magnolia Bark (Noupu), Apricot Seed (Xingren), Licorice Root (Gancao), Jujube (Dazao).
In Taiyang disease, after incorrect purgation, if there is slight wheezing, the exterior syndrome remains unresolved. This formula is appropriate. Severe wheezing after purgation indicates significant deficiency of interior Qi. Slight wheezing after purgation indicates rebellion of interior Qi. The pathogen has not transmitted to the interior and remains at the exterior. Guizhi Tang is given to resolve the exterior pathogen. Magnolia Bark and Apricot Seed are added to direct rebellious Qi downward.
Dried Ginger (Ganjiang), Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi).
After purgation followed by sweating, if Yang Qi is exhausted, irritability ensues, yet the patient is quiet at night. There is no vomiting or thirst, no exterior syndrome, and the pulse is deep and faint (Chen Wei Mai). The body has no significant heat. After purgation and sweating, Yang Qi is damaged and lacks warmth. With no exterior syndrome and a deep, faint pulse, deficiency-cold is prominent. "No significant heat" means only slight warmth. This is rootless deficient fire wandering on the exterior. Without the acrid-warm nature of Dried Ginger and Aconite, how can Yang Qi be restored?
