(With this book) firmly memorized, one can save countless lives. It differs significantly from the theories of Yin and Yang discussed by contemporary physicians.
Halve the dosage, using three qian of each ingredient.
Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (each 3 liang). The above four ingredients,
are crushed, sifted into powder, mixed with honey to form pills, sized like a chicken egg yolk. Take one pill, crush it, and mix it with a small amount of boiling water; take warm, three to four times daily, and twice at night. If warmth is not felt in the abdomen, increase to three or four pills; however, the decoction is more effective. Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) and Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) originally belong to the same formula. For the decoction method, cut the four ingredients according to the original dosage, add eight sheng of water, boil to obtain three sheng, remove the dregs, and take one sheng warm, three times daily. Use the decoction for urgent conditions. If there is a sensation of beating above the navel, it indicates movement of Kidney Qi; remove Baizhu and add Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) four liang; this is the method of adding Gui Zhi Jia Gui Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction with Additional Cinnamon Twig) when Ben Tun (Running Piglet Syndrome) is about to occur. If vomiting is frequent, remove Baizhu and add Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) three liang; since Ganjiang is already present but Shengjiang is added again, it indicates that Ganjiang does not treat vomiting. If diarrhea is frequent, continue to use Baizhu; as Baizhu can stop dysentery/diarrhea. If there is palpitations, add Fuling (Poria) two liang; palpitations are caused by fluid retention below the heart, hence Fuling is used. If thirsty and desiring to drink water, increase Baizhu so that the total reaches four liang and half; to resolve fluid retention and generate fluids. If there is abdominal pain, increase Renshen so that the total reaches four liang and half; this pain is due to Qi deficiency. *Ben Cao Bie Lu* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica: Supplement) states: Renshen treats abdominal distension and pain. If cold, increase Ganjiang so that the total reaches four liang and half; if there is abdominal fullness, remove Baizhu and add one Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Preparata); this abdominal fullness is due to insufficiency of Yang Qi. After taking the medicine, after approximately the time it takes to eat a meal, drink about one sheng of hot porridge to maintain slight warmth; do not uncover clothes or blankets. Drinking hot porridge after Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) aims to assist the medicinal power to disperse outward; here, drinking hot porridge aims to assist the medicinal power to warm inward.
Huo Luan (Acute Vomiting and Diarrhea Syndrome) presents with headache, fever, and body ache. In the *Lun* (Treatise), it is also stated: vomiting and diarrhea constitute Huo Luan. It is also stated: headache with body ache, aversion to cold with vomiting and diarrhea constitutes Huo Luan. Observing these together, the symptoms of Huo Luan are complete; it is likely a category of Shang Han (Cold Damage). Later generations mistook vomiting and diarrhea occurring in summer heat as Huo Luan, and also used Lizhong, even creating Da Shun San (Great Harmony Powder); these are groundless arguments. If heat predominates and there is desire to drink water, Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is indicated; this is Huo Luan where heat overcomes cold. If cold predominates and there is no desire to drink water, Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) is indicated; this is Huo Luan where cold overcomes heat.
Note: The symptoms of Huo Luan are all caused by disharmony of Cold and Heat Qi, mutual rejection of Yin and Yang, blockage of upper and lower passages, and failure of Water and Fire to interact. Wu Ling San separates clear from turbid; Lizhong Tang strengthens Yang Qi; both are treatments targeting the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner).
After recovery from a major illness, if there is a tendency to salivate excessively, it is because Stomach fluids are not retained, combined with Cold Fluid Retention, lingering indefinitely. This indicates Cold in the Stomach; it should be treated with pills for slow management. Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) is suitable.
