Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Zhongfeng (Wind Strike). Headache. Zenghan Zhuangre (aversion to cold with high fever). Limb pain, fever, aversion to cold. Dry nose, inability to sleep. Also treats irregular climate changes. When many people suffer from epidemics. Sudden warmth. Changing clothes arbitrarily. And after sudden heat. Suddenly turning into Yin-cold. Body pain, head heavy as a stone.
Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Baishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried), Gange (Radix Puerariae Lobatae) in equal parts.
Crush the herbs to the size of hemp seeds. Take five qian per dose. Add one dan and a half of water. Decoct until eight fen remains. Remove the dregs. If there is severe false cold, take it hot. If there are heat signs, take it warm. After taking the medicine, when the body cools down, stop the medication.
Hu notes: Regarding the above indications, it says "Shanghan Zhongfeng headache... Fever and aversion to cold, dry nose, inability to sleep." This indicates disease in the Yangming Channel. The formula uses Shengma, Gange, and Gancao, which embodies the principle of acrid-sweet dispersal of wind-cold. However, regarding Baishao Yao alone, it is suitable only for those with fever and sweating. For those with aversion to cold and no sweating, it is not suitable. In my opinion, it is safer to substitute it with Chishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra).
Treats persistent headache.
Gange (Radix Puerariae Lobatae), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae), Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) each ban liang; Congbai (Bulbus Allii Cepae) one bunch; Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) each yi liang.
Crush the herbs to the size of hemp seeds. Add three sheng of water. Decoct to obtain one dan and a half. Remove the dregs. Divide into two doses, taken hot.
Hu notes: The above formula is for treating headache caused by extreme dryness due to wind-heat in the Yangming channel.
Han Zhihe treated Shanghan diseases by prioritizing pulse diagnosis over symptom presentation. If the patient's pulses at both wrists are floating, rapid, and tight, it is named Shanghan. If the Cun pulse is weak and the Chi pulse is strong, although there is no aversion to wind or spontaneous sweating, this indicates that Yin qi has become excessive and manifests first in the pulse. If no medicine is administered to harmonize it, later there will inevitably be aversion to wind and spontaneous sweating. From after Lichun (Start of Spring) to before Qingming (Pure Brightness), Tiaomai Tang should be used as the main treatment. (Since it is called Shanghan, the symptoms should include aversion to cold and no sweating. Now it says later there will inevitably be aversion to wind and spontaneous sweating, which contradicts the symptoms. There may be an error.)
Gegen (Radix Puerariae Lobatae) yi liang; Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) each seven qian and a half; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried) ban liang.
Grind into coarse powder. Take five qian per dose. Add one dan of water. Add one piece of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), the size of a little finger, split open. Decoct until seven fen remains. Remove the dregs. Take warm. If the Cun pulse is weak as described previously, add three dates (Ziziphus jujuba). Decoct together.
(Note: The above formula is the precise prescription for inducing sweating in the Yangming channel. It is also suitable for Wind-Cold affecting the Hand-Taiyin channel.)
Furthermore, if the patient's pulses at both wrists are floating, rapid, and slow, it is named Zhongfeng. If the Cun pulse is weak. (The text is the same as above), Botie Tang should be used as the main treatment.
