Tendon Rupture Injury
Yaoshan said: Tendon rupture is a severe injury to tendons. According to "Nei Jing": The Liver governs tendons. Also: All tendons belong to the joints. "De Xiao Fang" states: Cold causes tendon spasm, heat causes tendon relaxation. "Ben Cao Gang Mu" states: Heat in Liver Qi leads to tendon flaccidity, resulting in spasm and contracture. He Jian stated: Dry heat scorching the joints causes contracture and pain. Danxi stated: Illness arising from tendons due to physical and mental stress is treated with moxibustion warming and guiding exercises. "Ling Shu Jing" states: In tendon exhaustion, fingernails and toenails turn blue, the patient shouts and curses incessantly, and death occurs in nine days. Therefore, "Yi Zong Jin Jian" distinguishes between tendon stiffness, laxity, deviation, alignment, cold, heat, wandering, and turning. One must first determine if the cause is falling, beating, or crushing, then treat according to the method. If tendons are severed, the condition is extreme; without secret effective methods, how can they be reconnected? Prescriptions follow:
Wei Shi Fang: Treats tendon rupture by applying *Liquidambar formosana* resin (Fengxiang Mo), which is Baijiaoxiang.

Change three times daily; tendons reconnect in half a month. This method was effective when Su Jingzhong treated a servant. Another method: For bleeding tendon injuries, crush *Pueraria lobata* (Gegen) to drink the juice, or decoct the dried root. Apply the crushed residue externally.
"Qian Jin Fang": Treats broken skin and bone injuries by applying hot feces from a white horse; leaves no scar.
Chen Shi "Xuan Cui" Prescription: Treats tendon rupture. Crush *Antennaria dioica* (Jinfucao) roots and leaves to extract juice. Apply to the severed tendon; sealing the wound allows reconnection. This flower is also called Xuanfuhua.
"Ling Yuan Fang": Treats fracture and soft tissue injury. Mix one spoonful of *Alumen* (Baifan) powder in a bowl of hot water. Soak a cloth, wring out, and apply hot compress to the injury. Pain stops shortly. Then realign bones and tendons and apply medicine.

Melt 4 liang of beeswax, mix with powder, and roll into pills the size of quince seeds. For simple injuries, dissolve one pill in wine. Stir-fry all together, wrap, and apply to the injury. Replace when cool. "Lei Bian" records using only preserved melon ginger lees mixed with red adzuki bean powder, applied to the break, fixed with fir or paulownia splints; recovery in three days. "Qian Jin Fang" also recommends crushing fresh Rehmannia, applying hot, and binding; also curative.
