Women suffering from soreness and weakness in the lower back, chest fullness, abdominal distension, fatigue, and a desire to lie down, who seek conception with all their efforts but fail, are often thought by others to have deficiency of the lumbar kidneys. Little do they know that this is actually due to the obstruction of the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) and Du Mai (Governing Vessel)! The Ren Mai runs along the anterior aspect of the body, and the Du Mai runs along the posterior aspect; however, both travel up and down following the Dai Mai (Belt Vessel). Therefore, if the Ren Mai is deficient, the Dai Mai sags forward; if the Du Mai is deficient, the Dai Mai sags backward. Even if fertilization occurs in the Chong Bao (uterus), it will inevitably result in miscarriage. Moreover, since the Ren Mai is already deficient, symptoms of Shan Xia (abdominal masses) must arise. These masses obstruct the uterus externally, causing the uterus to shrink within them, so that although sperm is deposited, conception cannot take place. What benefit would there be even in taking prestigious fertility prescriptions like Yuyan Tang? The treatment method must first eliminate the disease of Shan Xia, and then tonify the Ren Mai and Du Mai. In this way, one can harmonize Heaven and Earth, grasp Yin and Yang, breathe in essence and Qi, and form the embryo. The strength will be sufficient to sustain pregnancy without worry. With no external obstruction and internal capacity for containment, how could infertility occur?

The prescription used is Shengdai Tang (Lifting Belt Decoction).
Baizhu (Cortex Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 liang, stir-fried with soil), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 3 qian), Shashen (Radix Glehniae, 5 qian), Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 qian, coarse bark removed and ground), Qiyifen (Fumen Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae, 3 qian), Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, 3 qian, stir-fried), Fuling (Poria, 3 qian), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum, 1 qian, processed), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 1 qian, stir-fried).
Decoct in water and take continuously for thirty doses, after which the Qi of the Ren Mai and Du Mai will flourish. Take another thirty doses, after which the symptoms of Shan Xia will be eliminated. This formula benefits the Qi of the waist and umbilicus, effectively lifting and tonifying the Qi of the Ren Mai and Du Mai. As the Qi of the Ren Mai and Du Mai rises, Shan Xia naturally becomes intolerable. Furthermore, the formula contains Rougui to disperse cold, Qiyi to resolve accumulation, Biejia to break hardness, and Fuling to promote diuresis.有形 (solid/pathological products) will dissolve into无形 (Qi/functional state), filling the abdomen with ascending Qi. How could fertilization still lead to miscarriage?

Commentary: This formula is specifically designed for cases involving Shan Xia; therefore, Shashen, Qiyifen, and Biejia are used to break hardness and regulate Qi. If Shan Xia is absent, remove these three herbs and add Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae, 1.5 qian, stir-fried until black), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis, 1.5 qian, stir-fried), and Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii, 2 qian). Taking these three herbs will naturally relieve soreness in the lower back and abdominal distension. Biejia breaks Qi and should not be taken indiscriminately; it is suitable only for those with Shan Xia or Liver Qi Stagnation.

Verse:
Soreness in the lower back and abdominal distension give rise to infertility;
Obstruction of the Ren and Du Mai allows Shan Xia to run rampant.
Treatment should first eliminate the Shan Xia disease,
While simultaneously employing the most refined method to tonify the Ren and Du Mai.
Shengdai Tang contains Renshen, Shashen, Baizhu, and Fuling,
Along with Qiyifen and Biejia.
Add Rougui, Shenqu, Banxia, and Baizhu;
With prolonged use, pregnancy will naturally occur.
