The theory of "San Xiao" (Three Consumptions, referring to polydipsia, polyphagia, and polyuria characteristic of Xiao Ke disease) was formulated by Liu Hejian. Because Ma Zhengjun resided in Bianliang, he visited the descendants of Mr. Liu during his leisure time. Someone recommended him to teach medicine, which led to this encounter.
Zhengjun personally visited his home to seek the late Mr. Liu's unpublished manuscripts. The following three books were produced: *San Xiao Lun* (Treatise on Three Consumptions), *Qi Yi* (On Qi Suitability), and *Bing Ji* (On Pathogenesis). These had not been circulated in the world. Most of the texts were incomplete. Only *San Xiao Lun* was selected, with two diagrams of the Zang-Fu organs added at the beginning of the volume. The rest were left unpolished and handed over to the friend Mu Zizhao.
Zizhao was a disciple of Hejian and a descendant of Mu Dahuang. At that time, he was seeking an official position in the capital and was facing financial difficulties. Zhengjun wished to help him through this publication. Thus, I obtained a copy from Zizhao. Later, due to war and fire, the book was lost. Accidentally, I saw the text again at the place of my fellow townsman, Huo Sicheng Junxiang. However, the copies contained many errors. I merely transcribed it based on the original to await future scholars for detailed correction. The date is the Winter Solstice of the Jiachen year. Written by Jinxi Yelao (Old Man of Jinxi Stream), at the East of Xufang Baiting, by Monk Jiuting Temple, Master Wu transmitted this empirical prescription.
It treats cases where one drinks hundreds of cups of water yet still feels unsatisfied, and urine resembles oil or apricot juice color. After taking this medicine for three to five days, urination increases significantly, expelling toxins downward. The root cause will be permanently eliminated within ten days. This prescription was reviewed by Zihe, who stated it is a heavy-dose formula that can be used. Master Wu has personally verified its efficacy.
