Dairen (Zhang Congzheng's courtesy name) often visited a small stream. Once, braving the cold in the snow, he entered a bathhouse and subsequently contracted wind-cold again, leading to a severe illness that seemed incurable. It was only necessary to decoct and administer Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Wind-Dispersing Universal Benefit Decoction) alone. For one or two days, he ate nothing, drinking only when thirsty, but not excessively. People were instructed to frequently beat his thighs and press his abdomen. After three or four days of fasting, drinking water twenty times a day, on the sixth day, he developed delirium and visual hallucinations. He was purged with Tiaowei Chengqi Tang (Stomach-Regulating Downward-Pouring Decoction), sweated, and recovered. Dairen often told people: "When suffering from Shanghan (Cold Damage), do not use drugs recklessly; drinking water is the best medicine, but it must not stagnate and injure the body. Frequently rubbing and dispersing it is excellent! Only after six or seven days, if signs of interior excess requiring purgation appear, should one purge. Why would there be variations? Alas, physicians forbid patients from drinking water, resulting in deaths from thirst. If a patient is not thirsty, forcing them to drink will result in refusal." When Dairen first fell ill, he had nasal congestion, heavy voice, and headache, and his urine resembled the fluid of Hui Lin (Ashy Strangury). After taking 1.5 liang of Tiaowei Chengqi Tang, he felt nauseous, induced vomiting, sweated profusely, and had five or six bowel movements shortly after. A massive sweat occurred, and he recovered within a day. On that day, when drinking ice water, phlegm emerged as the water went down, about one or two bowls. Phlegm is the pathogen; when phlegm leaves, the disease leaves. Dairen was sixty-one years old at the time.
Dairen's female servant had a cold sore on her foot, commonly known as frostbite. Dairen prescribed Zhouche Wan (Boat Cart Pill) and Xunchuan San (River-Clearing Powder) to induce severe purgation, and her sore healed. Some people doubted this approach. Dairen said, "When Heart Fire descends, cold dissipates. What is there to doubt?"
A woman had a hard mass from the epigastrium to above the umbilicus, as hard as a beanbag and stone-like upon palpation. Others treated it as a pregnancy tumor, using acupuncture, toxic drugs, and countless prayers, futilely chasing the wind. One day, Dairen saw her and said, "This is Cold Phlegm." Palpating both wrists, he found the Cun (inch) pulses deep. How could it not be Cold Phlegm? He administered Gengdi San (Melon Seed Powder) to induce vomiting, expelling six or seven sheng continuously. The mass immediately reduced by more than half. After a few days, he vomited again. The expelled saliva and foam resembled chicken yolk, with a peculiar fishy and foul odor, totaling about two or three sheng. This process was repeated three times. Later, he regulated her condition with Renshen Tiaozhong Tang (Ginseng Middle-Regulating Decoction) and Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder), and her abdomen became flat.
