When Dai Ren (Zhang Congzheng) was in Xihua, the public mocked him for using the purging and vomiting methods, believing they caused diarrhea and emesis. One day, Wei Shouzhi accompanied Dai Ren into a restaurant, where they saw a man suffering from a tumor located precisely within the upper eyelid. The tumor resembled a gray plum, hanging down to cover the eyeball, rendering the patient unable to see. Dai Ren said to Shouzhi, "I will remove this tumor immediately, without waiting for our meal to cook." Wei did not believe him. Dai Ren asked, "How about we remove this tumor together?" The patient replied, "No one dares to cut it with a knife." Dai Ren said, "I do not use a knife; I have another technique." The patient agreed. Dai Ren led him into a small room, instructed him to lie prone on a bed, bound his nipples with rope, and pierced them to cause significant bleeding. He then instructed the patient to massage his eyes with his hands. On the tumor itself, he punctured it, causing discharge resembling sparrow droppings. The tumor flattened instantly.
Gaocheng is Dai Ren’s hometown. There lived an unmarried eighteen-year-old girl who had tumors on the dorsum of both hands. One resembled a rooster's spur, and the other like a horned nutlet. Her wrists could not accommodate bracelets. When viewed against the light, the tumors appeared like peach gum. Her prospective husband's family wished to annul the marriage. Upon seeing her, Dai Ren stated, "Tumors on the hand dorsum are called 'glue tumors' (Jiaoliu), while those on the face are called 'powder tumors' (Fenliu). This is a glue tumor." He punctured the tumor with a needle in a cross pattern and pressed out three or four spoonfuls of yellow, gelatinous pus. The tumor flattened immediately, and the nodule never recurred. The marriage was restored. Only those well-versed in this method would dare to employ it.
A woman in Xinzhai, over forty years old, suffered from a goiter consisting of three lobes. Dai Ren instructed her to induce emesis using saline solutions. After three sessions of inducing vomiting (Yong), three sessions of promoting sweating (Han), and three sessions of purging (Xia), the goiter had reduced by half. Subsequently, she took medication to resolve the goiter, leading to its complete disappearance. Generally, diseases located in the upper body are suitable for emetic therapy, provided there is proper judgment and adaptation of the method.
Zhao Junyu frequently suffered from hemorrhoids. He had used Fengyancao (Radix Bupleuri? *Note: Context implies specific herb, likely distinct from standard Bupleurum*), Ci Pi (Thorn Bark), Huai Gen (Sophora Root), and狸 (Raccoon dog/Li). Someone suggested grinding dried ginger into powder, applying it to pork, roasting it, and eating it. This resulted in dry, constipated stools that were difficult to pass and painful. Several days later, due to contracting jaundice, he underwent several intense episodes of emesis and purging. His hemorrhoids ceased to trouble him. Mr. Ma recorded this incident. Since Zhao Junyu met Dai Ren, his hemorrhoids never recurred.
Lu Zichun of Zhangban Village had a son aged seven or eight who suffered from coughing during summer, becoming severely emaciated. Dai Ren proposed using emetic therapy. Lu Zichun hesitated, fearing the child was too young and weak to withstand it. One day, the family gave him wine. Due to excessive consumption, he vomited profusely. Once the vomiting subsided, the cough stopped. This occurred because wine has a bitter taste, and bitterness belongs to the category of emetic agents. Lu Zichun then fully understood Dai Ren’s words.
