A general suffered from heart pain that was unbearable. Dairen (Zhang Congzheng) said, "This is not heart pain, but epigastric pain radiating to the heart region." The *Neijing* states: "When the Wood year is excessive and wind qi prevails, the people suffer from epigastric pain centered at the heart." He then administered over one hundred pills of Shenyu Wan (Divine Protection Pill). The condition did not improve. Someone asked, "This is cold in the epigastrium; it should be treated with warming and tonifying methods." The general, who knew Dairen's medical expertise well, sought medicine from him again. Dairen gave him over two hundred pills of Shenyu Wan, taken in one dose, resulting in six or seven bowel movements, and he was cured immediately.
An old man in Huangru Village suffered from spasms and convulsions of both hands, resembling sawing wood, and could not bear to cover himself even in winter. At that time, Dairen was passing through Wuyang and went via Huangru. Unable to use herbs in time, he needled the area above the Zhongzhu point on the back of both thumbs. Dairen said, "There is no disease from the elbows upward; only the hands are spasming. This is what the *Zuo Zhuan* refers to as 'wind causing diseases in the extremities' (Feng Yin Mo Ji)." Alternatively, one may needle the Houxi point, which belongs to the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian. When flexing the little finger and making a fist, the end of the crease marks the acupoint.
Chen Junyu from Nanxiang was about to take the autumn imperial examination. His head, neck, and face were swollen, extending to one eye, resembling half a pot. His pulse was flooding and large. Dairen examined him. The *Neijing* states: "Swelling of the face indicates wind; this is wind invading the Yangming Meridian." The Yangming meridian has abundant qi and blood. Wind-induced swelling is suitable for treatment via sweating. He prescribed Tongsheng San (Universal Rescue Powder), decocted with ginger slices, green onion roots, and fermented soybeans (Douchi), prepared as a large cup. After ingestion, he sweated slightly. The next day, Dairen stimulated his nasal cavity with a grass stem, causing significant epistaxis (nosebleed), and the swelling disappeared immediately.
Dairen often said: "Pediatric wind-heat convulsions are common conditions." During spasms, one must strictly forbid holding or restraining the limbs tightly. If held too forcibly, it will inevitably lead to adverse consequences. Excess qi and blood will cause bi-syndrome in one arm, gradually leading to atrophy and thinness, which is difficult to treat until old age. When the child is convulsing, place a bamboo mat on a cool floor and let the child sleep on it. Wait for the convulsion to subside naturally after the wind pathogen has circulated through the meridians and reached its peak, ensuring no harm comes to the body.
He Yifu from Yangxia suffered from Shanghan (Cold Damage). Within three days of onset, a physician incorrectly used purgation, resulting in Jie Xiong (Chest Binding Syndrome). He sought Dairen's treatment. Dairen said, "This was originally a Fengwen (Wind-Warmth) syndrome, which should not have been purged. Purging too early caused jaundice and chest binding. There is now stagnant blood in the chest. Further purging might deplete the righteous qi further. The only method that can cure this is emesis (vomiting therapy). Do not be alarmed by bleeding." He used Chatiao San (Tea Regulation Powder) and Genti San (Gentian Powder) to induce vomiting. Several shengs of blood were vomited, accompanied by epistaxis and hiccups. Then, using a towel rolled around a small needle, he had the patient lie with the blade under their pillow. Within a few days, he recovered.
