Take unrotted *Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus* (Zaojiao, 皂角), remove the peel, pods, and seeds, roast with honey (*Honey-fried*), crush, rub in water to form a thick juice, and boil into an ointment. Sniff it into the nose, bite a chopstick in the mouth, and continue until profuse salivation occurs.
Grind calcined alum (*Ku Bai Fan*, 枯白矾) into powder, fill it into the ear, and immediate effect will be observed.
Chilongzhao (Bitter Clove Bud, *Kuding Ding*, 苦丁香, 30 pieces each), Bitter Bottle Gourd Seed (*Kuhulu Zi*, 苦葫芦子, as needed), Musk (*Shexiang*, 麝香, a small amount).
Grind the above into powder. Use paper twists dipped in the powder for application.
Cuttlebone (*Wuyu Gu*, 乌鱼骨, 3 qian), Calcined Alum (*Ku Bai Fan*, 枯白矾, 3 qian), Lead Monoxide (*Miduoseng*, 密陀僧, 1 qian).
Grind the above into powder. First wash the affected area with medicinal water, then apply the powder by rubbing.
Another prescription: Lead Monoxide (*Miduoseng*, 密陀僧, as needed), finely ground. First wash the foul area with grain water (*Jiangshui*, 浆水), dry it, and apply directly.
Fine Iron Filings (*Xizhensha*, 细针砂, stir-fried), Buckwheat Flour (*Qiaomian*, 荞面, stir-fried, one bowl each of both), Barley (*Damai*, 大麦, similarly processed).
Take half a sheng of strong vinegar, mix with the first two ingredients to make a paste.
Before use, first wash the area thoroughly with hot soapberry water. Adjust the consistency of the paste made from the first two ingredients appropriately. After washing with warm grain water, retrieve the original iron filings. Once the beard and hair are clean, apply the black medicine.
Myrobalan Fruit (*Moshizi*, 没食子), Pomegranate Peel (*Shiliupi*, 石榴皮), Dried Lotus Leaf (*Gan Heye*, 干荷叶, pounded separately, 1 liang each), Chinese Gall (*Wubeizi*, 五倍子), Chebula Fruit Peel (*Hezipi*, 诃子皮), Baiyaojian (Fermented Tea Cake, *Baiyaojian*, 百药煎), Gold-thread Alum (*Jinsifan*, 金丝矾), Green Vitriol (*Lvfàn*, 绿矾, ground separately and added gradually to other drugs).
Grind the above seven ingredients into fine powder. Take five or six spoons of well-cooked flour, add good vinegar to make a flour paste, mix with the drug powder, and reapply to the beard and hair. Wrap with lotus leaves, then cover with a leather cap. After three to five hours, wash clean; the color will be very black. If a darker, shinier look is desired, wash with pig bile and grain water; the color will be black like crow feathers.
Another prescription:
Sour Pomegranate (*Suan Shiliu*, 酸石榴), Chinese Gall (*Wubeizi*, 五倍子), Sesame Leaves (*Zhima Ye*, 芝麻叶).
Pound the above together. Place in a silk bag, soak in water in an iron vessel, and use to comb the hair to turn it black.
The song says:
In the world, there is an immortal prescription for treating plague,
One liang of *Bombyx Batryticatus* (Jiangcan, 僵蚕) and two da huang (Rhubarb, 大黄),
Made into pills the size of bullets with ginger juice,
Mixed with honey and taken with well-water (*Jinghua Shui*, 井花水), bringing coolness.
Another method:
Puncture the swollen area with a Bian stone (*Bianshi*, 砭石) to let blood out, and immediate effect will be observed.
Natrii Sulfas Crystallitus (*Mayaxiao*, 马牙硝), Arsenolite (*Hanshuishi*, 寒水石), Plantago Seed (*Shunianzi*, 黍粘子), White Hellebore Root (*Guijiu*, 鬼臼), Sichuan Rhubarb (*Chuan Dahuang*, 川大黄), Arrowwood Branch (*Guijiancao*, 鬼箭草) (all equal parts), Borneol (*Naozi*, 脑子, a small amount).
Grind the above six ingredients into powder. Take one cup of fresh well-water (*Jinghua Shui*, 井花水), add one or two qian of the powder and borneol, and ingest; keep half for external use. Dilute with fresh water to appropriate thickness, sweep onto the swollen area with a chicken feather, and sit in a cool, ventilated place.
