A child from the Feng family in Gezheng, aged seven or eight, suffered from a condition called "na" (a parasitic or skin disease causing joint stiffness and pain) in the knee, resulting in limping. He had been experiencing pain upon walking for several days. Hearing that Dairen (Zhang Congzheng's courtesy name) refused to treat him, they sent someone to inquire why. Dairen said, "It is a minor illness; bring him here." That night, he administered Zhouche Wan (Boat and Cart Pill) and Tongjing San (Meridian-Regulating Powder), mixed with warm wine for ingestion. By midnight, both emesis and purgation occurred simultaneously: he vomited one bowl upward and defecated half a jar downward. Once in bed, the child told his mother, "My kneecap itches, I cannot keep still." Thereafter, he was instructed to take Wuji Wan (Black Gold Pill) daily to strengthen the sinews and bones. After one month, [the condition resolved].
Yuan San from Xiaoqu, having been injured by robbers on both lateral aspects of his knees, developed sores that failed to heal for years. Pus and blood constantly oozed out. However, whenever he drank cold water, liquid resembling cold water would exude from the sores, spreading into damp sores. He came to seek treatment from Dairen. Dairen said, "You must have two or three sheng [approx. 0.6-1.2 liters] of green fluid and several handfuls of phlegm-drool in your Middle Jiao (Middle Burner)." Yuan asked, "Why?" Dairen replied, "When you were robbed, frightful qi entered your abdomen. Fright injures the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. Moreover, both lateral aspects of the knees are regions governed by Shaoyang. This indicates that the Jia Wood (Gallbladder) has been invaded by pathogenic factors. Since Jia Wood corresponds to the color green, there should be green fluid. The Shaoyang meridian functions like 'ou' (fermentation/steeping) in the Middle Jiao. With frightful phlegm-drool latent in the Middle Jiao, when cold water is swallowed, it is obstructed by this phlegm-drool. The water then enters the sores laterally along the meridians; thus, drinking water causes fluid to exit the sores." Consequently, he first induced emesis of cold phlegm, resulting in profuse sweating like flowing water; subsequently, he induced purgation of green fluid, which indeed amounted to two or three sheng. Within one night, the sores dried and scabbed over. Truly remarkable!
While traveling, Dairen passed through Yangxia and visited an old friend whose condition was critical. Dairen went to examine him. The patient said, "I have no other ailments. Three years ago, during the height of summer, I went out into the countryside. Someone offered me boiled wine. As there were no vessels available to heat it in the village, I drank several sheng of chilled wine. Immediately, I felt stuffiness under the left hypochondrium, which gradually became painful and formed a hard mass that has not dissipated to this day. Acupuncture and herbal applications yielded no effect." Dairen palpated both wrists and found the pulses deep, solid, and forceful. He first administered Dusheng San (Single Sage Powder) to induce emesis, yielding two or three sheng of material colored like boiled wine, with unchanged aroma. Subsequently, he prescribed Hepi San (Spleen-Harmonizing Powder) and dampness-dispelling herbs. After five to seven days, the pulses throughout the body harmonized. It became clear that previous acupuncture treatments were ineffective and only increased suffering.
