A woman from Caizhai suffered from jaundice (Huang Bing), with generalized edema, a golden-yellow complexion, fatigue and weakness, loss of appetite, and a craving for raw mud or coal. Initially, a bitter emetic was formed into pills using steamed bread to induce vomiting, expelling one bowl of phlegm; subsequently, Zhouche Wan (Zhouche Pill) and Tongjing San (Tongjing Powder) were administered, resulting in five to seven bowel movements resembling ink; further treatment involved Daoyin Wan (Daoyin Pill) and Moshisan (Moshi Powder) to move qi and resolve stagnation. Within a few days, her muscles returned to normal.
Zhao Junyu from Anxi, while serving as a clerk in the Department of State Affairs, developed generalized yellowing of the skin. He consulted a physician who stated, "You have Yangming syndrome." The physician noted that Zhao and Ma Zhiji were both disciples of Zhang Dairen (Zhang Congzheng) and typically agreed on using Rhubarb (Dahuang), making it difficult to discuss his condition. Displeased, Zhao returned home. Suspecting no other illness, he took eighty pills of Sanhua Shenwan (Sanhua Divine Pill), but there was no effect. Realizing his damp-heat was excessive, he switched to Zhouche Wan (Zhouche Pill) and Junchuan San (Junchuan Powder), taking a large dose at once, which resulted in more than one dou of stool being expelled. Those with hardened feces cleared overnight, and the yellowing subsided. From this, Zhao further trusted Zhang Dairen's words.
The mother of Zhang Ziming from Nanxiang was extremely obese and accidentally developed edema, rendering her limbs immobile. Zhang Dairen instructed her to undergo upper-body emesis and sweating, followed by purgation to drain water, removing three or four hu of fluid. When the medication first acted, she lay supine with her feet elevated on a cloth bag stuffed with grass. As the medicine worked, she felt water flowing downward from above the waist and upward from the feet. The movement of water resembled a snake crawling through a tunnel or being pulled by a thread; her limbs felt intensely cold until the fluid converged below the navel and exited. Within ten days, the illness significantly improved, though residual pathogens remained. Zhang Dairen wished to continue treatment, but she ultimately did not follow his advice.
Li Qilao suffered from Yongshui syndrome (Gushing Water Syndrome), characterized by a sallow complexion, wheezing, bilateral foot edema where depression rebounded quickly upon pressure, audible splashing sounds when walking, frequent thirst, and inability to lie down and sleep. Zhang Dairen ordered him to first induce emesis to remove phlegm and induce sweating, then purge using Zhouche Wan (Zhouche Pill) and Junchuan San (Junchuan Powder), followed by Yishen San (Yishen Powder) for further purgation, and finally administer agents that separate yin and yang and promote urination to purge again. Once all water was eliminated, he recovered.
Zhou Jingzhi from Zhuojun returned from the capital to Luyi and became thirsty during the journey, drinking excessive amounts of water, which gradually led to swelling and fullness. Some prescribed Sanhua Shenwan (Sanhua Divine Pill), but he feared its potency was too harsh; others used Wuling San (Wuling Powder) to promote diuresis, but he found it too slow. After weeks of delay with no effect, it became evident that the skills of mediocre physicians were limited. Later, his hands, feet, and kidneys swelled, and both urination and defecation became obstructed. Chang Zhongming sought treatment from Zhang Dairen. Zhang Dairen instructed Chang to deliver the prescription, but by the time it arrived, Zhou had already died. Zhang Dairen remarked, "For patients with water retention, the pathogenic force is like a overflowing river; trying to remove it with cups and spoons is difficult! One must use the method of Yu the Great to divert the waters to achieve a cure!"
