Infants who do not cry without cause after birth are easy to raise. If they cry incessantly day and night, the mother should sincerely seek the reason: if thirsty, give water; if hungry, provide milk; if in pain, massage; if itchy, scratch. If the crying stops after these measures, the cause has been addressed. If the crying persists and continues with loud wailing day and night, it is due to Liver Heat (Gan Re). The ancient method prescribes Xie Qing Wan (Drain Green Pill, composed of Qiang Huo, Chuan Xiong, Hei Zhi Ren, Long Dan Cao, Dang Gui, Fang Feng, Da Huang, ground into powder, made into pills with refined honey, coated with Qing Dai), taken with clear tea. If there is incessant crying accompanied by fever and restlessness, it is due to Heart Heat (Xin Re). The ancient method prescribes Dao Chi San (Guide Out Red Powder, see formula under "Urination Difficulty"), decocted and taken warm.
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] For crying caused by Liver Heat, one need only clear Liver Heat without using too many ingredients; simply use Shi Jue Ming, Sheng Gan Cao, and Deng Xin three herbs, decocted in water for administration. For crying caused by Heart Heat, one need only drain Heart Heat; simply use Dan Zhu Ye, Tong Cao, and Sheng Gan Cao three herbs, decocted for administration. Stop when the disease is cured.
There are two main causes for Night Crying (Ye Ti): one is Spleen Cold (Pi Han), and the other is Heart Heat (Xin Re); both originate from the fetal period. By observing the infant's complexion and posture, the condition can be determined. If the infant has a bluish-white complexion, cold hands and abdomen, refuses to suckle, and curls up with the waist bent unable to straighten, this is Spleen Cold. The ancient method prescribes Gou Teng Yin (Uncaria Decoction, composed of Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, Fu Shen, Bai Shao, Fu Ling, Gan Cao, Mu Xiang, Gou Teng Gou, with Hong Zao as an adjuvant). If the face is red, lips are crimson, hands and abdomen are hot, urination is difficult, and there is restlessness and frequent crying, the ancient method prescribes Dao Chi San (see formula under "Urination Difficulty").
[Chen Shouzhen's Note] Crying due to abdominal pain from cold occurs mostly in the second half of the night because Yin Qi is abundant at night, and cold causes pain, hence crying after midnight. Simply use Dan Gan Jiang, Zhi Wu Yao, and Zhi Gan Cao, decocted for administration. Crying due to heart restlessness from heat occurs mostly in the first half of the night; if accompanied by sweating, lying on back while crying, red face, and heart heat, it must be Phlegm-Heat (Tan Re). Simply use three Deng Hua (Lamp Flower), grind them finely, decoct Deng Xin separately, mix the powder with the decoction, apply to the mouth, and administer with breast milk for best results; or alternatively, use the previous prescription of Zhu Ye, Tong Cao, and Sheng Gan Cao decocted together. If none of the above symptoms are present but the infant cries frequently, simply use five pieces of the lower half of Chan Tui (Cicada Slough) with wings and feet removed, along with seven cun of Deng Xin, decocted for administration, which can stop the crying.
