卦)收藏,肾气安宁;嘻字配属于三焦,四季吐纳时默读嘻,可以使三焦营运无阻,消除烦热;
六字读法∶“ ”,读如“丝”字音;“嘘”,读如“虚”字音;“呵”读如“喝”字音;
[Original Text] In spring, silently reciting "Xu" (Hissing) brightens the eyes and nourishes Liver Wood; at Summer Solstice, silently reciting "He" (Panting) allows Heart Fire to rest naturally; in autumn, silently reciting "Si" (Sighing) moistens Metal Zang (Lung); in winter, silently reciting "Chui" (Blowing) only requires calming the Kan Palace (Kidney); for the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), silently reciting "Xi" (Giggling) eliminates vexatious heat; throughout the four seasons, frequently silently reciting "Hu" (Breathing out) enables the Spleen to transform food. Remember not to vocalize so that the mouth and ears hear it; its efficacy surpasses even precious divine elixirs.
[Explanation] There is a rhyme in *Xiuzhen Shu* (*Book of Cultivation*) that assigns the Six Syllables to the Four Seasons and Zang-Fu organs: "Xu" corresponds to the Liver and Spring; during Spring breathing exercises, silently reciting "Xu" allows Liver Qi to flow smoothly and eyes to become bright; "He" corresponds to the Heart and Summer; during Summer breathing exercises, silently reciting "He" allows Heart Fire to be stored, keeping the mind calm and Qi tranquil; "Si" corresponds to the Lung and Autumn; during Autumn breathing exercises, silently reciting "Si" moistens Lung Qi, protecting it from Autumn dryness; "Chui" corresponds to the Kidney and Winter; during Winter breathing exercises, silently reciting "Chui" stores Kidney Yang (the fire within the Kidney, corresponding to the Kan Trigram in Bagua), keeping Kidney Qi peaceful; "Xi" corresponds to the Sanjiao (Triple Burner); during breathing exercises in any season, silently reciting "Xi" ensures unobstructed operation of the Sanjiao and eliminates vexatious heat; "Hu" corresponds to the Spleen and the Four Seasons; during breathing exercises in any season, silently reciting "Hu" enhances the transportation and transformation function of the Spleen and Stomach, ensuring normal digestion and absorption. Practicing the Six Syllables must be done with silent recitation in the mind; one must absolutely avoid vocalizing so that the ears hear it. The effect of this practice is excellent, surpassing the consumption of divine elixirs.
[Original Text] The rhyme states: When the Liver uses "Xu", open the eyes wide; know that when the Lung uses "Si", both hands lift high; when the Heart uses "He", cross hands high behind the head; when the Kidney uses "Chui", squat and hold the knees flat; when the Spleen uses "Hu", purse the lips; for Guest Heat in the Sanjiao, lie down and giggle ("Xi"). Frequently use "Xu" through the four seasons; do not use "Chui" during the Eight Solar Terms. Nourishing the Liver involves Xiang Huo (Ministerial Fire); it has draining but no tonifying aspects. The Kidney is True Water; it has tonifying but no draining aspects.
[Explanation] During Six Syllable breathing exercises, one can also coordinate movements from this rhyme, combining silent recitation with physical exercise. The method is: when silently reciting "Xu", keep eyes wide open; when silently reciting "Si", lift both hands upward; when "He", raise both hands and cross them behind the head; when "Chui", squat with legs and hold knees with both hands; when "Hu", slightly purse the lips; when "Xi", lie on the bed while practicing. Precautions: It is suitable to practice "Xu" frequently during Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter; however, during the Eight Solar Terms (Start of Spring, Spring Equinox, Start of Summer, Summer Solstice, Start of Autumn, Autumn Equinox, Start of Winter, Winter Solstice), one must not practice "Chui". This is because the Eight Solar Terms mark the beginning of growth, harvest, and storage, the extremes of cold and heat, and the harmony of Yin and Yang; practicing "Chui" at this time easily damages the Kidney. The Liver houses "Xiang Huo" (Ministerial Fire), which warms the whole body and promotes Zang-Fu activities. The Liver nature prefers smooth flow and should be frequently vented and dispersed, not depressed or filled; thus it is said: "The Liver is Ministerial Fire, having draining but no tonifying aspects." The Kidney governs storing Essence, which is also called "True Water" or "Yuan Yin" (Primordial Yin), synthesized from congenital Essence of parents and postnatal Essence from diet. It is the source of human growth, development, and reproduction; it should be frequently tonified to become fuller, and not drained to cause deficiency; thus it is said: "The Kidney is True Water, having tonifying but no draining aspects."
[Original Text] Liver "Xu": Governs dry throat, dusty complexion (blueish and lusterless), excessive red eye discharge and tearing, eye pain, hypochondriac pain, yellow-red urine or dysuria. Heart "He": Governs irritability, sore throat with heat and swelling, excessive sweating, heat in palms, dry throat and thirst. Spleen "Hu": Governs hot phlegm and saliva, yellow eyes, throat obstruction (Bi syndrome), epistaxis, dry mouth and tongue pain, heavy body and abdominal distension. Lung "Si": Governs wheezing and cough, vexatious thirst, chest oppression, phlegm, heat in palms, wind-induced sweating. Kidney "Chui": Governs emaciation due to disease, black complexion, dry mouth, tinnitus, swollen throat, pain in inner thighs, heat and pain in soles. Sanjiao "Xi": Governs cheek pain, throat obstruction, deafness and muddled hearing. These above treat the pathogenic factors of the primary diseases of the Six Meridians. However, deficiencies of the Five Zang organs are supplemented by the flavors and qi of medicines and foods. The Classics say: "Form consumes flavor." Thus, flavor returns to form, qi consumes form, thus form returns to qi; when Qi transforms, Essence generates; when flavors harmonize, form grows; therefore, the Five Flavors are appropriate. If disorders arise from the Five Emotions, which cannot be treated by medicine alone, the principle of Mutual Overcoming (Wu Sheng) is appropriate. Worry overcomes Anger; Liver belongs to Wood, emotion is Anger. Excess harms itself, hence "Anger injures Liver," so control it with what overcomes it. Fear overcomes Joy; Heart belongs to Fire, emotion is Joy. Excess harms itself, hence "Joy injures Heart," so control it with what overcomes it. Anger overcomes Pondering; Spleen belongs to Earth, emotion is Pondering. Excess harms itself, hence "Pondering injures Spleen," so control it with what overcomes it. Joy overcomes Worry; Lung belongs to Metal, emotion is Worry. Excess harms itself, so control it with what overcomes it. Pondering overcomes Fear; Kidney belongs to Water, emotion is Fear. Excess harms itself, so control it with what overcomes it.
[Explanation] The six syllables "Xu", "He", "Hu", "Si", "Chui", and "Xi" each have specific indications: "Xu" treats Liver Meridian conditions such as dry throat, blueish lusterless complexion, red eyes with excessive discharge, eye pain, bilateral hypochondriac pain, yellow-red urine, or difficult/painful urination. "He" treats Heart Meridian conditions such as irritability, sores with redness/swelling/heat/pain in the throat, excessive sweating, heat in palms and soles (Five Center Heat), dry throat and thirst. "Hu" treats Spleen Meridian conditions such as internal heat, excessive phlegm/saliva, yellow eyes, throat swelling/obstruction, epistaxis, dry mouth/tongue pain, heavy body, and abdominal distension. "Si" treats Lung Meridian conditions such as wheezing/cough, vexatious thirst, chest oppression, phlegm, heat in palms/soles, and sweating upon exposure to wind. "Chui" treats Kidney disease conditions such as emaciation, black complexion, dry mouth, tinnitus, throat swelling/pain, pain in inner thighs, and heat/pain in heels. "Xi" treats Sanjiao disease conditions such as cheek pain, throat swelling/obstruction, and ear blockage with poor hearing. The above treat the primary meridian diseases of the Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, Kidney, and Sanjiao. For diseases caused by deficiency of the Five Zang organs, treatment should combine medicine and diet to tonify the Five Zang using "Qi and Flavor". *Su Wen: Yin Yang Ying Xiang Da Lun* states "Form consumes flavor." Form refers to the physical body, including Zang-Fu, meridians, sinews/bones, skin/hair, and flesh/blood. Flavor refers to dietary nutrients. The physical body grows and develops by absorbing dietary nutrients; thus, the Five Flavors nourish the form (Flavor returns to Form). When the form is nourished, it generates Yuan Qi (Primal Qi), which is the Jing Qi in food. Jing Qi nourishes the form, making it robust. Therefore, the form relies on Jing Qi for survival; normal Qi transformation generates Essence of the Five Zang, and rich nutrition makes the form grow. Thus, tonifying the Five Zang is best achieved through the Five Flavors of diet. If diseases arise from imbalance of the Five Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pondering, Fear), medication is not always necessary; instead, based on the generation and overcoming cycles of the Five Elements among Zang organs and emotions, the Six Syllables practice is appropriate. The relationship between Six Syllables, Five Emotions, Five Zang, and Five Elements is shown in the table below: [Table omitted]. The Theory of Five Elements holds that elements generate and overcome each other. Generation means mutual nourishment and support; Overcoming means mutual restriction and control. The order of generation is: Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood. The order of overcoming is: Wood overcomes Earth, Earth overcomes Water, Water overcomes Fire, Fire overcomes Metal, Metal overcomes Wood. Generation and overcoming multiply in sequence, cycling infinitely. In the overcoming relationship, any element has "I overcome" and "Overcome me" relationships. What I overcome is what I conquer (Sheng); what overcomes me is what I cannot conquer (Bu Sheng). Thus, the overcoming relationship is also called the relationship of "Conquered" and "Unconquered". Five Element overcoming applies to disease treatment. Taking Lung Metal (emotion Worry, syllable "Si") as an example: Fire (Heart, emotion Joy, syllable "He") overcomes Metal; Metal overcomes Wood (Liver, emotion Anger, syllable "Xu"). Fire is the "Unconquered" of Metal; Wood is the "Conquered" of Metal. This corresponds to "Joy overcomes Worry" (Fire overcomes Metal) and "Worry overcomes Anger" (Metal overcomes Wood) mentioned in this text. The descending clarity of Lung Metal (Worry, "Si") suppresses the hyperactivity of Liver Wood (Anger, "Xu"); while the yang-heat of Heart Fire (Joy, "He") restricts the excessive descending clarity of Lung Metal (Worry, "Si"). When Lung Metal is excessive (Jie Guo) and self-injures, causing symptoms like sinking of Lung Qi, shortness of breath, and wheezing, one can use the overcoming relationship where Heart Fire (Joy, "He") conquers Lung Metal (Worry, "Si"), assisting Heart Fire's yang-heat to warm the Lung and treat shortness of breath/wheezing. This is "Joy overcomes Worry"; combined with Six Syllables, lung disease can be treated by silently reciting "He". Similarly, when Liver Wood (Anger, "Xu") is excessive and self-injures, causing symptoms like Hyperactive Liver Yang, headache, and vertigo, one can use the overcoming relationship where Lung Metal (Worry, "Si") conquers Liver Wood, causing organ Qi to descend clearly and suppress Liver Yang hyperactivity. This is "Worry overcomes Anger"; combined with Six Syllables, liver disease can be treated by silently reciting "Si". The conquest treatments for each organ's Six Syllables are as follows: Worry overcomes Anger: For Liver Wood disease, silently recite "Si" to restrain, or alternate "Si" and "Xu". Fear overcomes Joy: For Heart Fire disease, silently recite "Chui" to restrain, or alternate "Chui" and "He". Anger overcomes Pondering: For Spleen Earth disease, silently recite "Xu" to restrain, or alternate "Xu" and "Hu". Joy overcomes Worry: For Lung Metal disease, use "He", or combine "He" and "Si". Pondering overcomes Fear: For Kidney Water disease, use "Hu", or combine "Hu" and "Chui". There are various application modes for Six Syllables: one can silently recite a single syllable like "Xu"; or recite in sequence Xu, He, Hu, Si, Chui, Xi; or combine with organ-specific indications, e.g., Liver disease read "Xu", Heart disease read "He", Spleen disease read "Hu", Lung disease read "Si", Kidney disease read "Chui"; or recite according to cold/heat patterns, e.g., Heat pattern read "He", Cold pattern read "Chui". One need not stick to one method. Specific practice methods are detailed by Zou Pu'an of the Song Dynasty in *Taishang Yuzhou Liuzi Qijue*: Preparation task: "Knock teeth thirty-six times to settle the spirit, stir turbid saliva in the mouth, rinse two or three hundred times until clear water forms, then bow head left and swallow, guiding it down with intention until it reaches the abdomen." Breathing method: "Bow head, open mouth, recite 'He', expelling toxic gases from the heart. While reciting, ears must not hear the sound; if heard, Qi becomes coarse, damaging Heart Qi. After reciting, bow head, close mouth, slowly inhale pure Qi of Heaven and Earth through nose to tonify Heart Qi. While inhaling, ears must not hear the sound; if heard, Qi becomes coarse, also damaging Heart Qi." Pronunciation of Six Syllables: "Si" is pronounced like "Si" (Silk); "Xu" is pronounced like "Xu" (Empty); "He" is pronounced like "He" (Drink); "Xi" is pronounced like "Xi" (West); "Chui" and "Hu" retain their original sounds.
