Take 100 pills per dose on an empty stomach, delivered with salted water or yellow wine. Avoid "Three Whites" (white sugar, white flour, white salt). For individuals over forty years of age, whose qi and blood gradually decline, add Ban Long Jiao (Deer Antler Glue) 4 liang.
This glue can generate essence and nourish blood, enhance intelligence and calm the spirit, unblock the San Jiao (Triple Burner), tonify the Five Viscera, benefit the Heart and Kidney, beautify the complexion, prevent disease, and prolong life; it is a sacred medicine for treating deficiency damage. Deer antlers connected to the skull cap are preferred. Remove the cap, clean thoroughly, use 50 liang (do not use naturally shed ones), cut into three-inch segments. Wash thoroughly with fresh well water to remove dirt and bloody impurities inside the horn. Combine with Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), Chuan Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) each 5 liang, and Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus) 8 liang. Place these five medicines together with the deer antler into a clean jar. Fill water up to the shoulder of the jar. Seal the jar mouth tightly with bamboo leaves and oiled paper. Place the jar in a large pot filled with water, steam using a large steamer, and simmer slowly with alternating mild and strong fire for three days and nights. Frequently add boiling water to the outer pot to compensate for evaporation. Remove, filter out the dregs, return the liquid to a clay pot, and boil down into glue for later use. When mixing with medicines, the coarse residue of the horn is called Lu Jiao Shuang (Deer Antler Ash).
Commentary by Feng Chu Zhan: The design intent of the above two formulas is excellent, generally supplementing the Pre-heaven Essence in the morning and regulating the Post-heaven Spleen/Stomach in the evening. However, in the Taihe Wan, half consists of draining/transforming agents and half of tonifying agents. Are Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Dou Kou (Tsaoko Fructus), and Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) suitable for long-term consumption? In the Jiji Wan, can Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) be taken continuously for long periods? It would be more prudent to use Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) in the morning and prepare pills from Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) ingredients in the evening, which is extremely steady and refined.
