Shan Zha (Hawthorn Fruit, *Crataegi Fructus*) (six liang), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven, *Massa Medicata Fermentata*) (two liang), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber, *Pinelliae Rhizoma*, processed), Fu Ling (Poria, *Poria*), each three liang; Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*), Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit, *Forsythiae Fructus*), Lai Fu Zi (Radish Seed, *Raphani Semen*), each one liang. Grind into fine powder, make pills with steamed wheat cake paste, and take with warm water.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, *Panacis Quinquefolii Radix* or *Ginseng Radix*), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*, honey-fried), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger, *Zingiberis Rhizoma*, roasted), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*, stir-fried), Qing Pi (Green Tangerine Peel, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride*), Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*), in equal parts. Decoct in water and take orally. For severe vomiting, add Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber, *Pinelliae Rhizoma*).
Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig, *Cinnamomi Ramulus*) (two liang five qian), Shao Yao (Peony Root, *Paeoniae Radix*), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*), each one liang; Yi Tang (Maltose/Syrup) (half sheng); Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, *Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens*) (one liang five qian); Da Zao (Jujube Fruit, *Zizyphi Fructus*) (six pieces); Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit, *Chaenomelis Fructus*), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root, *Bupleuri Radix*), each five qian. Each dose is one liang, decocted in water, strained, and taken with two spoons of syrup added.
Treats vomiting due to deficiency-heat in the Spleen and Stomach, or diarrhea with anorexia.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, *Panacis Quinquefolii Radix* or *Ginseng Radix*) (one qian); Huang Qi (Astragalus Root, *Astragali Radix*) (two qian, stir-fried); Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) (five fen); Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) (five fen); Bai Fu Ling (Poria, *Poria*) (four fen); Bai Shao (White Peony Root, *Paeoniae Radix Alba*) (seven fen); Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*) (three fen); Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*) (two fen, stir-fried). Decoct in water and take orally.
For Spleen and Stomach deficiency injury, tonifying the Middle and boosting Qi, Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) or Yi Gong San (Yi Gong Powder) may be used. Here, specifically within warming formulas, the sour-cold nature of Shao Yao (Peony Root, *Paeoniae Radix*) and the bitter-cold nature of Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*) are added. This is likely because the deficiency is recent and there is internal dryness-heat, so these are temporarily used to clear the branch symptoms. Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*) is a premier herb for tonifying the Stomach; why not use it? The name "An Wei" (Calming the Stomach) differs from "Bu Wei" (Tonifying the Stomach). If Stomach Qi is purely deficient, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*) is essential. Now, although there is deficiency, there is also dryness-heat, meaning the Stomach has not reached pure deficiency, hence Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*) is not used. Using three qian of Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, *Panacis Quinquefolii Radix* or *Ginseng Radix) paired with two fen of stir-fried Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*) differs from the worldly practice of recklessly using large amounts of bitter-cold herbs.
Treats external contraction of Wind-Cold, internal injury from dietary accumulation, headache with aversion to cold and fever, or cholera-like diarrhea, or malaria.
Jie Geng (Platycodon Root, *Platycodi Radix*), Da Fu Pi (Areca Peel, *Arecae Pericarpium*), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark, *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex*), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome, *Cimicifugae Rhizoma*), Fu Ling (Poria, *Poria*), each one qian; Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) (five fen); Huo Xiang (Patchouli Herb, *Agastaches Herba*) (one qian five fen); Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf, *Perillae Folium*) (one qian). Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, *Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens*) and Da Zao (Jujube Fruit, *Zizyphi Fructus*) in water and take orally.
When Zheng Qi (Upright Qi, *Zheng Qi*) is strong and robust, there is no fear of external contraction; when the Spleen and Stomach function healthily and move smoothly, there is no worry of food stagnation internally. With slight insufficiency, external contraction and internal injury occur alternately. Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root, *Platycodi Radix*), and Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf, *Perillae Folium*) use their acrid-sweet properties to disperse external pathogens; Hou Po (Magnolia Bark, *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex*) and Da Fu Pi (Areca Peel, *Arecae Pericarpium*) use their bitter-acrid properties to unblock internal stagnation; Huo Xiang (Patchouli Herb, *Agastaches Herba*) serves as the Sovereign herb, internally harmonizing the Middle Jiao and externally releasing the exterior, leading all other agents to restore Zheng Qi (Upright Qi, *Zheng Qi*), thus earning the name Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San (Patchouli Powder to Restore Upright Qi).
