This formula is applicable regardless of the seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter). It is indicated for cases characterized by persistent coughing, dry and scanty sputum, fever with bone pain, dizziness and distending sensation in the eyes, occasional aversion to cold, a wiry and rapid pulse in all six positions (cun, guan, chi on both hands), progressive emaciation, insomnia at night, and even swelling and induration between the cheeks. Administration of this formula leads to recovery. Spirit and vitality increase, which is referred to as "seeking water within fire" (promoting fluid generation through mild warming to assist qi transformation), ensuring an inexhaustible source of kidney yin.
Huai Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) [8 qian to over 1 liang], Danpi (Moutan Cortex) [1 qian], Shanzhrou (Corni Fructus) [2 qian], Fuling (Poria) [3.5 qian], Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) [2.4 qian], Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) [stir-fried with salt water, 1 qian], Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) [1 qian], Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) [3 qian], Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) [6 fen], Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) [scrape off rough bark before decoction, 1 qian].
If the chi position (reflecting kidney qi) lacks spirit/vitality, add Shu Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) [1 qian]. Decoct with three large bowls of water until one bowl remains. Take warm before meals, twice daily. Do not retain the dregs. After taking the medicine, consume food immediately to moderate its action. After several doses, fever subsides and cough decreases. If the six pulses are surging yet slow and weak, accompanied by physical fatigue, administer the aforementioned formula mixed with Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction). Upon recovery, take Babai Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) [4-5 qian] swallowed with light salt water every morning. Subsequently, take one large pill of the following nourishing paste that cultivates Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi), dissolved in plain boiled water. This is akin to adding oil to a lamp for sustained nourishment.
Huai Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) [12 liang], Huai Shengdi (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) [whole, washed clean with clear water, sliced, 6 liang], Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) [heart removed, 5 liang], Tiandong (Asparagi Radix) [heart removed, 3 liang], Danpi (Moutan Cortex) [4 liang; reduce by 1 liang if the stomach pulse is not excessively large], Sheng Baishao (Raw Paeoniae Radix Alba) [2 liang; add 1 liang if the liver pulse is extremely large], Sheng Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) [6 liang], Digupi (Lycii Cortex) [2 liang, washed clean with clear water], Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) [3 liang; add 1 liang if the cun position is strong and chi is weak]. Decoct the above ingredients in clear water. Collect the first and second decoctions, filter out the dregs, and boil down into an extremely thick paste. Add the following medicines to form large pills.
Select Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) [3.2 liang, dried with mild heat, ground into very fine powder], Bai Fuling (Poria) [dried with mild heat, ground into pure powder, 3 liang], Bai Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) [dried with mild heat, ground finely, 2.4 liang], Shang Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) [stir-fried with Ge Fen (Armeniaca Mume Semen Pulveratum) until bead-like, ground into fine powder, 3 liang], Lian Laobaimi (Refined White Honey) [3 liang]. Mix these into the previous paste to form large round pills. Each pill weighs 4-5 qian. Take one pill dissolved in plain boiled water on an empty stomach every morning, after taking Babai Wan. If the chi pulse remains wiry and rapid, accompanied by dry throat and parched mouth, this indicates insufficient yin water failing to control yang fire. The patient should be instructed to decoct 2-3 liang of Shudi and 4-5 qian of Maidong daily in sufficient water to produce 2-3 bowls of concentrated juice, drinking it freely as tea. Such regulation will lead to immediate recovery.
