Walking in streets and alleys may cause the child to be sterile. Standing directly in front of a door may cause the child's voice to fail and deafness. Being near flowing water may cause the child to suffer from Qingmang (blindness). Being placed near fire may cause the child to develop ulcerative sores. Contact with forest wood may cause the child to experience spontaneous convulsions. Such taboos should all be known and understood.
Fetal Epilepsy (Tai Xian) is caused by fright received in the womb or by exposure to toxins. Its manifestations include fever, cyanotic complexion, spasms of the hands and feet, tight jaw closure, rigid trunk, strabismus or closed eyes, excessive crying with refusal to nurse, and frequent recurrences. Although its name differs from Fetal Fright (Tai Jing), its nature is similar; treatment methods should be consulted together.
Take 49 whole scorpions (including head and tail), remove their toxicity, wrap each in one fresh mint leaf (Bohe Ye), bind firmly with silk, bake dry over fire, and grind into powder. Add a small amount of Cinnabar (Zhusha) and Musk (Shexiang) powder. Form pills the size of tung seeds using honey. Administer by dissolving in Hook Vine (Gouteng) decoction after meals.
Fetal Fright (Tai Jing) occurs when the mother's regulation during pregnancy is abnormal, such as drinking alcohol, indulging desires, or experiencing anger, fright, and palpitations, which damage the Heart. The Heart governs blood vessels and responds to the fetus. After birth, the infant will likely exhibit poor spirit, pale complexion, initial warmth followed by flushed cheeks and susceptibility to fright, fear at movement, palpitations at noise, teeth grinding with red cheeks, limb contractures, frequent convulsions and irritability, breath-holding spells turning the body purple, occasional cold limbs, cyanosis at the Yintang area, high fever with refusal to nurse, startle during sleep, slight twitching of hands and feet, counting-like movements of ten fingers, rigid body, upward eye deviation, clenched fists with everted eyeballs, cyanotic face with frightened crying, salivary flooding and vomiting, open fontanelle with retracted cheeks, foaming at the mouth, trismus and puckered lips, umbilical and abdominal distension, visible blue veins on the forehead, facial swelling and abdominal distension, crow-like sounds, snake-eye appearance, and blueish eyes or closed eyelids. These are severe adverse prognoses and difficult to cure; therefore, early treatment is advised upon diagnosis. If it progresses to wind syndrome, it is difficult to treat, especially since infants have delicate blood vessels and cannot tolerate heavy doses. Reddish-blue eyes indicate a treatable condition; dark black-blue eyes indicate critical danger. Finger veins curving inward at the Tiger's Mouth (Hukou) point are treatable; those extending outward through the three segments are unfavorable. Floating purple color at Yintang, frothy saliva, and frequent convulsions are also adverse signs. Boils on the head and face, large as fists, named "Fright Qi," must be lanced to heal; do not apply toxic ointments, as this damages tissue and worsens the condition. Ulcerative sores on the feet resembling rotten holes indicate the child will not survive five years.
