The feces of the male rat that are pointed at both ends taste bitter and salty, are slightly cold in nature, non-toxic, belong to the Water element, and enter the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. It is indicated for pediatric epilepsy (Xian Ji), abdominal distension, and recurrence of illness after recovery from Shanghan due to overexertion (Lao Fu), all of which involve heat pathogens in the Yangming meridian. Its bitter and cold properties can clear the heat in these meridians, thus treating these conditions. It also treats abdominal pain caused by "Yin Yi" (a condition where heat toxins are transferred between partners after recovery from febrile disease) in men, and breast engorgement (Chui Ru) and mastitis (Ru Yong) in women. This utilizes its ability to clear heat, soften hardness, dissipate nodules, and drain accumulation, while traversing into the Liver and Stomach organs. When combined with Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Shancigu (Colchici Cormus), Shandougen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Pugongying (Taraxaci Herba), Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Juye (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix), Zihuadiding (Viola Yedoensis Herba), and Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), it is effective in treating mastitis and breast cancer (Ru Yan).
For Yin Yi and Lao Fu in men, use Shushi Tang: Take fourteen pointed rat feces, a large handful of the white root of Chinese chives (Jiu Bai Gen), add two cups of water, decoct to one cup, and take warm. Efficacy is indicated by the excretion of sticky sweat. If no sweat occurs, administer again. For breast engorgement in women, take seven rat feces and seven red dates, remove the pits, wrap the feces inside the dates, char until carbonized but retaining substance (Cun Xing), add a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang), and mix with warm wine for oral administration. This also treats early-stage mastitis.
Only male rats are used for medicinal purposes. Their fat can be decocted into an ointment and applied externally to burns or scalds with ulceration; raw and crushed, it treats traumatic injuries; it is indicated for pediatric Gan syndrome (malnutrition/parasitic chronic wasting disease in children); it can be decocted in wine and taken immediately. It tonifies adults suffering from bone-steaming consumption (Gu Zheng Lao - tidal fever and night sweats typical of tuberculosis); it can be eaten as part of a soup. Rat bile dropped into the eyes improves vision, and it can be dripped into ears for deafness, but the gallbladder dissolves shortly after the rat dies, making it extremely rare. The fat/oil treats sores and ulcers as well as burns and scalds. Decoction of its feces treats pediatric epilepsy, and critical conditions such as Lao Fu and Yin Yi following Shanghan.
Taste: Salty. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Preparation: Remove wings and feet, stir-fry.
Lougu, also known as Tu Gou (Mole Cricket), is instantly effective for treating ten types of edema. Its efficacy varies by location: swelling on the left is treated to resolve on the left, swelling on the right to resolve on the right; upper body swelling is reduced superiorly, lower body swelling recedes inferiorly. Furthermore, it is said that promoting urination and defecation below the waist constitutes the "Lower" method, serving as a key remedy for obstruction of urine and stool; astringing and consolidating above the waist constitutes the "Upper" method, serving as a simple prescription for incontinence. It also treats mouth ulcers and breast toxicity when ground in wine and taken orally; applied topically, it is quite effective for scrofula (Luo Li); it is particularly spiritual in resolving hard bone nodules. Those with deficiency constitution should avoid it due to its urgent/potent nature.
