[Yi Xue Run Chang Wan (Benefit Blood and Moisten Intestine Pill)]
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 6 liang), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, peeled and de-veined, stir-fried), Huo Ma Ren (Hemp Seed, 3 liang each; the above three ingredients are pounded into a paste together), Zi Su Zi (Perilla Fruit), Ting Li Zi (Descurainia Seed or Lepidium Seed, 1 liang each), Zhi Ke (Aurantium Peel, bran-fried), Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel, 2.5 qian each), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis, 3 liang), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, stir-fried), Rou Cong Rong (Cistanche Stem, 1.5 qian each).
Pound the aforementioned herbs into fine powder. Mix with the paste made from the first three ingredients and pound for over a thousand times. Then add refined honey to form pills. Make the pills as large as wutong seeds. Take 60 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, with plain boiled water.
Indications: Cold constipation and deficiency constipation in the elderly, as well as cold qi accumulation in masses (Pi Ji).
[Jiu Zhi Niu Ru Yin (Leek Juice and Cow Milk Drink)]
Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber, soaked in decoction seven times), Liu Huang (Sulfur, select clear and pure ones, grind extremely fine, and detoxify using a willow wood pestle). Simmer only with fresh juice of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) until thickened. Add dried steamed biscuit dough, mix evenly, and pound in a mortar for hundreds of strokes. Form into pills as large as wutong seeds. Take 15 to 20 pills per dose. Generally, take with non-ashy wine or ginger decoction. For women, take with vinegar decoction.
Indications: Obstruction of the pylorus (You Men), with qi rushing upward to the respiratory gate (Xi Men), causing dysphagia and obstruction, inability of qi to descend, and difficult defecation. This condition is named "Obstruction of the Lower Wan," and treatment focuses on unblocking the You Men.
[Dang Gui Run Chang Tang (Angelica Sinensis Moistening Intestine Decoction)]
Dang Gui Shen (Base of Angelica Sinensis Root), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Tao Ren (Peach Kernel, pounded, 1 qian each), Hong Hua (Carthamus Flower), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 3 fen each), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root, prepared by steaming), Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia Root, prepared by steaming, 5 fen each), Huo Ma Ren (Hemp Seed, 3 qian). Alternatively, add 5 fen of Bing Lang (Betel Nut) powder. If Da Huang (Rhubarb Rhizome) is added to this formula, it is named Dang Gui Run Chang Tang, with identical indications.
This prescription consists of herbs belonging to the Hand-Yangming and Foot-Yangming meridians. Dang Gui, Sheng Di Huang, and Shu Di Huang nourish yin to generate blood; Tao Ren, Huo Ma Ren, and Hong Hua moisten dryness and invigorate blood; Bing Lang has a descending action that breaks qi stagnation. Sheng Ma is added because, according to the principle of heaven and earth, ascent must precede descent. If clear yang fails to ascend, turbid yin will fail to descend. As stated in the *Classic*: "Earthly qi ascends to become clouds, heavenly qi descends to become rain."
[Modification of Leek Juice and Cow Milk Drink]
Indications: Dead blood (stasis) in the epigastrium, leading to dryness and withering, pain upon swallowing food, regurgitation, and constipation.
Take equal parts of Jiu Cai Zhi (Leek Juice) and Niu Ru (Cow Milk), sip frequently. If there is phlegm obstruction, add Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice). If Niu Ru is removed from this formula and replaced with aged wine, it treats blood ge (blood dysphagia).
Jiu Cai Zhi specifically eliminates blood stasis; this belongs to the Foot-Yangming meridian. Jiu Cai Zhi is pungent and warm, benefiting the stomach and eliminating stasis; Niu Ru is sweet and moist, nourishing dryness and generating blood. Once stasis is removed, there is no obstruction in the stomach; once blood is moistened, the large intestine becomes unblocked, allowing food to pass down smoothly.
