Generally, if the tendons/patterns behind the ear are water-red, it is normal; apricot-red is secondary; bright red requires fire-clearing treatment; purple-black or cyan colors indicate untreatable conditions. Furthermore, patterns that are uniform, straight, ascending to the ear apex without branches are superior. If there are branching and entangling patterns, or if they cross horizontally over the hairline, even if pale red, they are mostly incurable.
