Wu Rongfeng (personal name Linshu), a Xiucai (scholar) from Yuyao, suffered from impetigo (Nongke Chuang). After prolonged medical treatment without cure, an acquaintance later presented him with a prescription, claiming it was obtained from a renowned physician and was the premier remedy for carbuncles and sores. Following this prescription resulted in a cure. In the Gengxu year, I myself suffered severely from this condition and also recovered using this prescription. It is recorded below:
Dust hanging upside down in the kitchen (San Qian, specifically ancient dust accumulated near the ground in roof corners), Pine Rosin (Yi Qian), Fennel (Yi Qian), Sichuan Pepper (Yi Qian), Sulfur (Yi Qian), Toad (Yi Qian), Calcined Alum (Yi Qian), Atractylodes Rhizome (Yi Qian), Angelica Dahurica Root (Yi Qian), Cinnabar (Yi Qian).
Boil the above ingredients, then grind them together into a fine powder. Take one chicken egg, make a small hole in the middle, pour the powder into the egg, seal the hole with paper, and stew it over a gentle fire until cooked. Gently remove the shell, retaining only the inner membrane. Then, mix this with raw lard and the decocted powder by pounding until smooth. Wrap the mixture in Ge cloth (Pueraria lobata fiber cloth) and apply frequently to the itchy affected area.
Annotation by Bingzhang: Impetigo presents with intense itching due to dampness obstructing toxic pathogens, leading to the generation of microscopic organisms that cause itching. Therefore, herbs such as Sulfur, Calcined Alum, Pine Rosin, and Sichuan Pepper, which possess properties to dry dampness and kill parasites, are used, thereby achieving therapeutic effects.
The work "Jinghua Yuan · Shuobu" cites extensive materials, and its recorded single-herb prescriptions often prove effective in treating diseases. My cousin-in-law, Zhou Lianshi (Tai Shi Shibing), informed me of this, so I recorded this prescription for future reference. My mother, Lady Zhou (Tairuren), enjoyed distributing medicinal prescriptions. While residing in Tai Prefecture, many people sought her remedies. In the summer of the Gui Mao year of the Daoguang reign, a patient suffering from scalds and burns had widespread ulceration; medical treatments were ineffective. He came to beg for a prescription. Consulting this book, I found a formula recommending the application of sesame oil infused with Hibiscus tiliaceus flowers. At that time, these flowers were in full bloom. Treating according to the prescription resulted in immediate recovery. Consequently, I collected the flowers to infuse in oil bottles to distribute to others, with no instance failing to produce quick results.
Annotation by Bingzhang: For scalds and burns, use 1.5 Liang of mineral ash and one small bowl of clear water. Throw the mineral ash into the water, stir evenly, and allow it to settle and clarify. Take one cup of the clarified ash water, add one cup of Tung Oil, and beat or stir vigorously more than a hundred times. The mixture will turn yellowish-white and become like a thick paste. Apply this to the blistered areas caused by scalds or burns; it dries upon application. This method has been tested repeatedly with success.
