One must first clearly understand the contraindicated acupoints for needle insertion: Naohu (GV17), Xinhui (GV22), and Shenting (GV24); Luoque (BL9), Yuzhen (BL9), and Jiaosun (TE6); Luxi (TE19), Chengqi (ST1), and Chengling (GB15); Shendao (GV11), Lingtai (GV10), and Danzhong (CV17) are forbidden; Shuifen (CV9), Shenque (CV8), and Huiyin (CV1) are forbidden; Henggu (KI12), Qichong (ST30), and Shouwuli (LI13); Jimen (LR8), Chengjin (BL56), and Qingling (HT8); Ruzhong (CV17) upwards; Sanyangluo (TE7). These twenty-three points must not be needled. Pregnant women should avoid needling Hegu (LI4); this is also a general rule regarding Sanyinjiao (SP6). Stone Gate (Shimen, CV5) must be avoided for both acupuncture and moxibustion; if needled in women, it results in lifelong infertility. Additionally, Yunmen (LU2) and Jiutui (CV15); Quepen (ST12) and Kerenzhu (GB14) should not be needled deeply. Deep needling of Jianjing (GB21) may cause fainting; urgent tonification of Zusanli (ST36) can restore stability. Accidental puncture of the five Zang organs leads to death; bleeding from Chongyang (ST42) implies fatal injury. Haiquan (GV25), Quanliao (SI18), above the nipple; Zhijian Zhongsui (likely referring to spinal marrow points) causes kyphosis; Shouyuji (LU10), Xian Gu (likely referring to Xiangu ST2 or similar), inner thigh; Xibin (likely referring to Dubi ST35), Jin Hui (likely referring to Yanglingquan GB34 or similar), and Kidney Meridian points; three cun below the axilla and groin; orbital joints—all require thorough assessment.
There are forty-seven points contraindicated for moxibustion: Chengguang (BL7), Yamen (GV15), Fengfu (GV16) are adverse; Jingming (BL1), Cuanzhu (BL2), Xia Yingxiang (likely referring to Yingxiang LI20); Tianzhu (BL10), Suliao (GV26) upwards, Linqi (likely referring to Shangliao BL31 or similar); Naohu (GV17), Ermen (TE21), Maotong (likely referring to Touwei ST8 or similar); Heliao (SI18), Quanliao (SI18), Sizhukong (TE23); Touwei (ST8), Xiaguan (ST7), Renying (ST9), etc.; Jianzhen (SI9), Dayou (likely referring to Xinshu BL15 or similar), Xinshu (BL15) are same; Ruzhong (CV17), Jizhong (GV11), Baihuanshu (BL30); Jiutui (CV15), Yuan Ye (likely referring to Yuanye or similar), Zhou Rong (ST25); Fu Ai (ST16), Shaoshang (LU11) and Yuji (LU10); Jingqu (LU8), Tianfu (LU3) and Zhongchong (PC9); Yangchi (TE4), Yangguan (likely referring to Mingmen GV4 or similar), Di Wuhui (GB29); Lougu (SP8), Yinlingquan (SP9), Tiaokou (ST38); Yinmen (BL37), Shenmai (BL62), Chengfu (BL36) are forbidden; Futu (ST32), Biguan (ST31) connect to Weizhong (BL40); Yinshi (ST33) downwards, seek Dubi (ST35). Do not apply moxa fire to these points.
Needles must be made from horse-bit iron; gold needles are even more excellent. The process involves refining, coating with toad venom paste, inserting into cured meat, and boiling with specific herbs.
[Note] Horse-bit iron is used because the horse corresponds to the Wu (Horse) branch, which belongs to Fire. Fire conquers Metal (Gold), symbolizing the control of sharpness. Using pure gold for needles is superior. The refinement method: Heat iron wire until red-hot in fire, cut into lengths of two, three, or five cun. Coat the needle with Toad Venom Paste (Chan Su), briefly heat in fire, remove, and repeat coating and heating three times. While hot, insert the needle between the skin and flesh of cured meat. Boil water (three bowls), add the needle-infused meat, and boil until the water evaporates. Pour out, immerse in cold water, and retrieve the needle once cool. Insert the needle into yellow earth over a hundred times to remove "fire toxicity." The needle tip must be smooth and rounded, not sharp. Finally, wrap the handle with copper wire.
