Guilou Xiebai Baijiu Decoction (Formula seen in *Jingui Yaolue*)
Indicated for Chest Bi (a syndrome characterized by chest stuffiness and pain), accompanied by wheezing, coughing with expectoration, chest and back pain, shortness of breath, a deep and slow pulse at the Cun position, and a slightly tight pulse at the Guan position.
Add Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome) two qian to the formula, named Guilou Xiebai Banxia Decoction. It treats Chest Bi where the patient cannot lie flat, and heart pain radiating to the back.
Xiao Jianzhong Decoction
Da Jianzhong Decoction (Formulas seen in *Shanghan Lun*)
Treats severe cold pain in the heart and chest, vomiting with inability to eat, abdominal coldness, qi rushing upward causing skin protrusions resembling heads and feet, and severe pain throughout that is intolerant to touch or pressure.
Changsun Xin Dian commented: The upper and middle Jiao are obstructed by Cold Evil. Therefore, Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) are used to raise the Yang Qi of the upper Jiao, combined with Yitang (Maltose) to establish Middle Qi. Furthermore, since Huajiao (Sichuan Pepper Fruit) has a descending nature, it directs rebellious Qi downward and restores the Yang Qi of the lower Jiao; this serves as the primary formula for warming and tonifying.
Fuzi Jingmi Decoction
Treats Cold Qi in the abdomen, borborygmus like thunder, cutting pain, rebellious fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, and vomiting.
Xu Zhongke said: The brilliance of this formula lies in the use of Jingmi (Rice). The presence of both sound and pain indicates Cold Qi in the abdomen. However, the fullness is located in the chest and hypochondrium rather than the abdomen, indicating that the pathogen is high while the pain is low. The Cold Evil actually ascends from below, which corresponds to the concept that Kidney Deficiency causes Cold to move within the center. Thus, there is rebellious vomiting without fever. Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root) warms the Kidney and disperses Cold; Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome) stops vomiting. Only Jingmi (Rice) is used together with Gancao (Licorice Root) and Dazao (Jujube Fruit) to harmonize the Stomach and establish Middle Qi. Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) is avoided to prevent stagnation of Qi.
Dahuang Fuzi Decoction
Pain on one side of the hypochondrium accompanied by fever. (Qian Yuan Shi stated that "pian" [one-sided] should be read as "man" [fullness].) The pulse is tight and wiry, indicating Cold.
Upon palpation, there is fullness extending to the hypochondrium, and all six pulses are wiry and tight. Without Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root), the Cold cannot be warmed; without Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), the Excess cannot be purged; without Xixin (Asarum Root), the accumulation cannot be dispersed. These three herbs indeed work in concert without contradiction.
Nongpu Sanwu Decoction
For cases involving pain and constipation, this decoction is indicated.
Danggui Shengjiang Yangrou Tang (Formulas seen in *Jingui Yaolue*)
Treats Hanhan (Cold Hernia) with abdominal pain, as well as hypochondriac pain with a sensation of urgency inside. It also treats postpartum abdominal Li pain (severe abdominal pain).
If Cold is predominant, add Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) two liang five qian. If Pain is predominant with vomiting, add Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) five qian and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) two qian five fen.
Nuangan Decoction (From *Jingyue Quanshu*)
Treats Liver and Kidney Deficient-Cold, presenting with lower abdominal pain, hernia, and other symptoms.
Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (2-3 qian) Gouqi (Lycium Fruit) (3 qian) Fuling (Poria) Wuyao (Lindera Root) Xiaohui (Litsea Fruit) (each 2 qian) Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) (1-2 qian) Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood) (1 qian, or Muxiang is acceptable) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) (3-5 slices)
Decoct in water and take orally.
Note: Adding Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Xixin (Asarum Root), Taoren (Peach Seed), and Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit) to this formula yields miraculous effects in treating hypochondriac pain due to Liver Deficiency.
Zhi Xiong San
Treats stabbing pain in the right hypochondrium.
Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) (each 5 qian) Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (3 qian)

Tuiqi San
Treats pain in the left hypochondrium, distension, fullness, and anorexia.
