Gao Huang (BL43): Governs the deficiency of Yang Qi, various chronic colds resulting from deficiency syndromes, nocturnal emission, rebellious Qi with hiccups, Ge Ye (dysphagia), mania, confusion, forgetfulness, and errors due to various diseases. To locate the point, the patient must sit flat on a bed, bend knees level with the chest, and wrap both hands around the knee joints to separate the scapulae, ensuring no movement. Press with fingers one fen below the fourth thoracic vertebra and two fen above the fifth thoracic vertebra, mark with ink, then draw a horizontal line with ink approximately six cun apart, located inside the scapula in the space between the third intercostal spaces of the fourth and fifth ribs, in the empty space between ribs, just enough to accommodate the side of a finger. Rub the surface of the paravertebral muscles at the bony gap; when pressed, if the patient feels traction in the chest door and numbness in the middle finger, this is the true point. Moxibustion can be performed up to 100 or 1,000 moxa cones. After moxibustion, if Qi stagnation feels excessive, Qihai (CV6) and Zusanli (ST36) can be moxed to drain fire and strengthen the lower body. Post-moxibustion may cause excess Yang; one should adjust and preserve oneself carefully, avoiding licentiousness.
Huan Men: Governs youth with dual deficiency of Yin and Yang, sallow complexion with emaciation, loss of taste in food, coughing with nocturnal emission, tidal fever with night sweats, heart pain, radiating pain in chest and back, and symptoms of Wu Lao Qi Shang (Five Exhaustions and Seven Injuries). If treated early according to the method, moxibustion is invariably effective. To locate the point, first use a wax string. For male patients, use the left foot; for female patients, use the right foot. Measure from the big toe along the sole, sticking closely to the skin, straight up to the middle of the popliteal crease, then cut.
If the woman's foot is small and difficult to measure accurately, one can take the Jianliao (TE14) point on the right shoulder, measuring against the skin to the tip of the middle finger. Alternatively, taking Gao Huang (BL43) alone and moxing it is also excellent; next, mox Si Hua (Four Flowers), which is invariably effective.
Next, let the patient untie their hair, divide it evenly to both sides, stand upright with the body straight. Take the previous string, align it with the tip of the nose, lead the string upward, follow the midline of the head down to the back of the neck, stick to the skin along the spine until the end of the string, and mark with ink (this is not a point). Take another stalk core, have the patient close their mouth, place the stalk core across the corners of the mouth to the lips, then hook the center of the stalk core up to the root of the nose, forming a "Ren" (人) shape. Cut at the two corners of the mouth. Straighten this stalk and place it on the previously marked ink spot. Measure horizontally from the center, ensuring no height difference. Mark the ends of the stalk core with ink; this is the moxa point. Start with seven moxa cones, accumulating to one hundred cones. Initially, only these three points should be moxed.
Cui Shi Si Hua (Cui's Four Flowers): Cures diseases same as Huan Men, totaling six points, symbolizing Kan Li Ji Ji (mutual interaction of Water and Fire). To locate, have the patient stand upright, slightly retract arms. Wrap a wax string around the neck, marking forward at the laryngeal prominence and backward at the Dazhu (BL11) bone with ink. Let it hang down forward, cutting where it aligns with Jiuwei (CV15). Flip the string backward, placing the original Dazhu ink mark on the laryngeal prominence ink mark, and the laryngeal prominence ink mark on the Dazhu bone mark. From the midline of the spine, let the two ends of the string hang down along the skin to the end, marking with ink (this is not a point). Take another stalk core, have the patient close their mouth without smiling or moving, measure horizontally, cut at the corners of the mouth. Return to the ink marks on the back, fold in half, measure horizontally, and mark the ends (these are moxa points). Also measure vertically along the spine, marking top and bottom (these are moxa points). Start with seven moxa cones. Accumulate to one hundred cones. If the sore heals but the disease remains, repeat moxibustion according to the previous method, hence "accumulate to one hundred cones." However, only mox the two points on the spine, and mox sparingly; every cycle, mox three to five cones. Too much moxibustion may cause the back to curl. When moxing these six points, it is also advisable to mox Zusanli (ST36) to drain fire.
Jing Men Si Hua (Meridian Gate Four Flowers): Refers to Cui Shi Si Hua points. Do not mox the two points on the spine; instead, open to both sides, totaling six points. The upper two points are one cun wide apart; the lower four points are equal, all compared by hanging lines. This represents changing Li Feng to Kun Feng, meaning descending Heart Fire to generate Spleen Earth. These are suitable for Yang deficiency. Hua Tuo said: For wind, deficiency, cold, and heat, only deficiency syndromes are unsuitable for moxibustion. But medical texts also say: For deficiency consumption and tuberculosis, early moxibustion of Gao Huang and Si Hua is indicated, before the deficiency consumption fully forms. If weak and emaciated with accompanying fire, even if moxed, only Neiguan (PC6) and Zusanli (ST36) should be moxed to dissipate phlegm-fire. Early onset of Yin fire is unsuitable for moxibustion; discussed but unverified, now seen in the outline of Cold Damage.
Qi Zhu Ma Xue (Riding Bamboo Horse Point): Specifically governs carbuncles, back sores, swollen toxins, ulcers, scrofula, wind-related disorders, and all unnamed swollen toxins. Moxibustion drains Heart Fire. Start from the transverse crease of the wrist of the male left arm or female right arm. Use a thin bamboo strip to measure to the fleshy end of the middle finger, then cut. Have the patient remove upper and lower clothes. Place a large bamboo pole across the patient, lifted slowly by two people, feet off the ground by about five cun. Two more people hold the sides to prevent shaking. Place the measured bamboo strip against the pole, vertical from the coccyx along the spine, measure to the end of the strip, and mark with ink (this is not a point). Compare with the patient's proportional bamboo strip, fold two cun flat, place on the previous ink mark. Measure horizontally one cun to each side from the center; this is the moxa point. Mox 21-37 cones; extremely effective.
Jing Gong (Essence Palace): Specifically governs nocturnal emission. Three cun lateral to below the 14th thoracic vertebra. Mox seven cones; effective.
Gui Yan Xue (Ghost Eye Point): Specifically dispels TB worms. Have the patient raise hands upward and turn slightly backward; two depressions appear on the waist, known as Yao Yan. Mark with ink. Mox on the night of Gui Hai day in the sixth month during Hai hour, without others knowing. Si Hua, Gao Huang, and Fei Shu (BL13) can also dispel worms.
Pi Gen Xue (Root of Stagnation Point): Specifically treats Pi Ku (abdominal masses). Three and a half cun lateral to below the 13th thoracic vertebra, mox the left side more. If present on both sides, mox both. Another method: Use a stalk core to measure from the big toe to the heel. Take this stalk from the tip of the coccyx to its end. Open one leek-leaf width to each side. Mox the opposite side (left for right lesion, right for left lesion). Acupuncture 3 fen, mox seven cones; miraculous effect. Another method: At the bifurcation of the second toe, mox 25-35 cones. Mox the opposite side for the affected side. After moxing overnight, rumbling in the abdomen indicates efficacy.
Zhou Jian Xue (Elbow Tip Point): Treats scrofula. Mox the opposite side for the affected side. If congenital, for males left and females right, mox Fengchi (GB20) is especially good. Another method: Use a stalk core to measure the corners of the patient's mouth, fold into two segments, and measure in the wrist pit. The ends of the upper, lower, left, and right four directions are the points. Moxibustion is also effective.
Gui Ku Xue (Ghost Cry Point): Treats possession by ghosts/hu-huo,恍惚 (trance), tremors, and jaw clenching. Bind the patient's two thumbs together. Place moxa cones on the four corners of the nails and the flesh behind the nails, igniting at the seam. Efficacy is indicated when the patient cries out asking them to leave.
Jiu Zhu Wu (Moxing for Zhu and Wu): Treats Shi Zhu (corpse transmission), Ke Wu (guest intrusion), Zhong E (sudden evil attack). Three cun behind the nipple, mox male left and female right, or on the tips of the two big toes.
Jiu Shan Tong (Moxing for Hernia Pain): For inguinal hernia (pian zhui). Use a stalk core, measure the corners of the patient's mouth, fold into three segments like a "Y" shape. Place one end at the center of the umbilicus, the two ends at the sides below the umbilicus. The sharp ends are the points. Mox the opposite side for the affected side; if both sides affected, mox both. Moxa cone size of millet grain, mox forty cones; miraculous effect. Another method: At the midpoint of the transverse crease on the middle segment of the big toe and second toe, mox male left and female right. Also treats Qi-related heart/abdominal pain, testicular retraction/swelling, and acute lower abdominal pain.
Jiu Fan Wei (Moxing for Reverse Regurgitation): One cun below the nipples, or three fingers below the medial malleolus, slightly slanting forward.
Jiu Chang Feng Zhu Zhi (Moxing for Intestinal Wind and Hemorrhoids): One cun lateral to below the 14th thoracic vertebra. Most effective for long-standing cases.
Jiu Zhong Man (Moxing for Swelling and Fullness): Between the two big toes or one and a half cun above the second toe.
Jiu Zu Si (Moxing for Sudden Death): For all sudden fainting or abrupt cessation of breath. Mox the inner side of the two big toes, distance from nail like a leek leaf.
Jiu Dian Feng (Moxing for Vitiligo): In the depression of the middle joint of the middle finger on both hands. Effective for all warts, spots, and moles.
